Toyotomi Hideoshi (豊臣 秀吉 1536-1598) succeeded Oda Nobunaga as military ruler of Japan in 1582. Like his predecessor, he did not actually adopt the discredited title of shogun. Instead he revived the old Fujiwara title of kampaku, or regent.
