Revision as of 06:20, 23 November 2005
The Hawiye tribe is one of the largest Somali clans. They live mostly in central and southern Somalia. It is largely agreed that they descended from the Irir Samaale. Some sources, including Human Rights Watch, indicate that Hawiye is the largest Somali clan. Conversely, the Canadian Report of the Somalia Commission of Inquiry shows Darod as being the largest.
Abdullahi Isse, the chairman of the Somali Youth League (which fought for Somalian Independence), and Aden Abdullahi Osman, the first president of Somalia, were both members of the Hawiye clan.
