The flag of Western Sahara is the flag used by the Polisario Front and other supporters of the Sahrawi republic to represent Western Sahara, a region occupied by Morocco. It was adopted on February 27, 1976.
The colors are black, red, white and green (the Arab colors), with the crescent and star being a Muslim symbol. The colors have various interpretations, one used throughout the Arab world claims they signify the Muslim caliphates. Another gives a specific Sahrawi meaning to the color scheme: red as the color of the blood of Sahrawi martyrs; the black stripe on the top signifying Moroccan occupation, while the white stripe stands for peace, and the green one for turning the desert green.
Its similarity to the flag of Palestine is not intentional, as many Arab flags are similar in shape and color schemes.
