A Chinese Odyssey (Chinese: 大話西遊) is a series of two 1994 films, directed by Jeffrey Lau. They are some of actor Stephen Chow's most famous movies, the first one being A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora's Box (西遊記第壹佰零壹回之月光寶盒) and the second one being A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella (西遊記大結局之仙履奇緣). The two films together can be called a "sad comedy" showcasing Stephen Chow's comic genius while telling a sad love story.
Story
Template:Spoiler The two films act as sequels to the classic Journey to the West tale. It has been some time since the Monkey King (Stephen Chow), Longevity Monk (Law Kar-ying), Piggy (Ng Man Tat) and Sandy successfully retrieved the scriptures from the west. However the Monkey King, unhappy with his treatment, rebels against the Buddha and even tries to kill his own master. As a punishment, Bodhisattva Guanyin reincarnates him into a man called Joker. Joker has no memory about his past and gets involved with different demons and women, even falling in love with a female spirit named Lin Zixia (Athena Chu). Eventually Joker finds a box called Pandora's Box which can transport him back to time and finds out his true identity as the Monkey King. When his old enemy Bull King has captured Longevity Monk, Piggy, Sandy and Zixia, Joker returns as the Monkey King and defeats the Bull King, but sadly not before the Bull kills Zixia. In the end, the Monkey King uses the Pandora's Box to go back in time and journeys to the west with his three partners once again, in order to forget his sad past. Before continuing the journey though, he notices Joker and Lin Zixia arguing on a roof. Regretful of what he had done in the past, he uses his powers to possess Joker and kisses Zixia one last time.
