The university is named after its founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who introduced the Transcendental Meditation technique to the world.
In India, MMYVV is part of the Maharishi Educational System with more than 250,000 students, 6,000 faculty/teachers and 4,000 administrative and support staff across 250 districts in India.

Courses offered at the university include Transcendental Meditation, Maharishi Sthapatya Veda, TM-Sidhi Programme, Maharishi Gandharva Veda, Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health, Maharishi Global Administration through Natural Law, Maharishi Jyotish and Yagya Programmes, Maharishi Corporate Development Programme and Maharishi Invincible Defence Programme.
The university is also a member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
Thousands of students have already graduated and been awarded degrees.
A distance education program is also being established.
