The 2010 Explosion on Deepwater Horizon drilling rig occured on April 21, 2010, when personnel from semisubmersible drilling rig 41 mi (66 km) off Lousiana coast reported fire. The fire reportedly started at 10:00 p.m. CST in the US sector of the Gulf of Mexico. The rig was at about 41 mi (66 km) off Lousiana coast. The majority of the 126 member crew is safe but eleven are still missing. Seven were critically injured and hospitalized. Some reports indicate 15 missing. Two of them were air lifted to a trauma center in Mobile, Alabama. Many of the rig's crew members who were able to escape were brought onshore on a workboat.

US Coast Guard has already launched a massive rescue operation. Four helicopters, four coast guard boats and one plane are being used for rescue operations.

Deepwater Horizon

The drilling rig is owned by Transocean Ltd but is leased by BP. The Deepwater Horizon is 396 feet (121 m) long and 256 feet (78 m) wide. It was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries Shipyard in South Korea in 2001. The rig can accomodate up to 130 people and is for operations in water depths of up to 8,000 feet (2,400 m). Maximum drill depth is 5,500 feet (1,700 m)

Investigation

The Coast Guard and the Minerals Management Service have already launched investigation on possible causes of the explosion, while the environmental protection teams were on a standby in Morgan City, LA to assess possible environmental damage as soon as the fire is put out.
