The Americas are the two continents located between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, namely North America and South America. Central America is often called that, as if it is a separate entity, but technically it is a part of North America. The Americas are often also described collectively as the Western Hemisphere or the New World.
The name America is derived from that of Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer.
