Geronimo Stilton is a fictional character in the Geronimo Stilton series of children's books.
The character is an Italian speaking mouse who lives on Isola dei Topi (the Island of Mice) and works as a journalist for the fictional newspaper L'Eco del Roditore, or "The Rodent's Gazette". He has a sister named Thea Stilton and a cousin named Trap Stilton, and his favourite nephew, Benjamin. Geronimo is a nervous, mild-mannered mouse who would like nothing better than to live a quiet life, but he keeps getting involved in far-away adventures with Thea, Trap and Benjamin. The books are written as though they are autobiographical adventure stories. The author is identified only as Geronimo Stilton, and references are occasionally made to past and future books in the series.
The series originated in Italy and has become the most popular children's book series in that country, even outselling Harry Potter. The books have been translated into English, French, and other languages.
There are also audio-cassette and CD versions of the Geronimo Stilton books, read by Edward Herrmann. There are 3 stories in each collection, and books 1 through 9 have been read on tapes and CDs so far.
There are supposedly thirty-five volumes in the series that will be released. There are rumors going around that fifty volumes will be in the series, but no one knows yet for sure.
In Italy, there are rumors about a Geronimo Stilton television series, with a Geronimo Stilton life-size puppet reading his adventures. There is also a rumor about a Geronimo Stilton feature film.
Scholastic, Inc. publishes the books and they have become increasingly popular in the United States.
