Manitowaningis a small town located on Manitoulin Island in the county of Assiginack. It was the first Europen Settlement on Manitoulin Island and is right on Lake Huron. Located on Highway 6 it is 545 km (341 miles) from Toronto, and 328 km (250 miles) from Sault Ste. Marie. The census recorded in 2000 tells of a total of 11,410,046 people. Most of them living in cottages along the lake.
Township (Assiginack)
Manitowaning is found in the county of Assiginack on Lake Huron. It was the first European settlement in Assiginack as well as on all of Manitoulin Island. Manitowaning is the main town in the county of Assiginack and was originally founded in 1836 as a center of the island's Aboriginal education.
Cottages
Most of Manitowaning's population lives in cottages just on the outskirts of the town. These cottages mainly line the coast of Lake Huron up intil the Indian Reserve of Wikwemikong that is found right across the bay from Manitowaning.
