April Fools DYK?
Hey, MJ, would you be interested in collaborating with me on an April Fools double DYK nom? I'm looking to add two ship articles: one from the WWI era, and one from the WWII era. I thought if you were interested, you could write the WWII-era article. Let me know if you're interested, and I can fill in the details. Thanks. — Bellhalla (talk) 12:09, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- If you could write an article for the Ellerman Lines ship SS Lesbian (1923), I'll write about their former SS Lesbian (1915). I was thinking about a hook like this:
Other than the usual sources available, like Plimsoll, Convoyweb, etc.; I've found a source for the second one that might be helpful: Here (I also thought of an alternative hook involving only the latter ship, but I'm pretty sure it would be too ribald for the Main Page.) — Bellhalla (talk) 13:46, 15 March 2009 (UTC)…that the Ellerman Lines employed two Lesbians in the early 20th century but both met with tragic fates in the Mediterranean, one in World War I, and the other in World War II?
- Well, I'd seen that there was an older one, but Miramar showed it as Leyland Line (I think). How about either:
or:…that the Ellerman Lines employed three Lesbians in the early 20th century but two met with tragic fates in the Mediterranean, one in World War I, and the other in World War II?
This will give a little context and helps avoid the rather suggestive had. If we want to get suggestive, we could always use only the third ship and say:…that John Ellerman employed not one, not two, but three lesbians in the early 20th century?
(no offense intended to anyone reading this.) — Bellhalla (talk) 00:39, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Wasn't much of an improvement, really. I just linked a few things. Sources look fine, although I did not make an effort to compare what the sources say with what the article says. IX 812
IX 812 was an Air India express flight and not an Air India flight. Air India Express is a subsidiary of Air India. So this accident should article shouls remain only in the AIX article. If you believe that IX 812 incident should be added to AI article, then you should go ahead and add all IC incidents and accidents into the same article as IC in now a subsidiary of AI. Editing problems on Ngurah Rai International Airport
Thank you for your earlier intervention. I appreciate you apparently impartial and sober approach. Sadly 124x247x221x146 (talk · contribs) is still at it. He has since deleted the Terminals column from the Selaparang Airport article and again deleted Wings Air. Maybe he flew with them once and had a bad experience, but his behaviour is odd to say the least. He is still at it and really I think he is just a trouble maker and a belligerent vandal. I have addressed my opinions on this and the nature of the editing on his talk page, my own talk page and both the discussion pages. He has now had his way with the Ngurah Rai International Airport article and the vandalised table remains with riddled with misleading and factually incorrect details that he is apparently determined to have there. This despite accurate, up to date and properly sourced information being provided to it on now several occasions and also now sitting on the discussion page. He has failed to pull back and indeed has just continued to behave in a belligerent and inappropriate manner. I believe his actions are so far from good faith that they have disappeared over the curvature of the earth. I request that the table provided on the Ngurah Rai International Airport discussion page is uploaded and page protection instituted. Indeed I think it would be a good idea if this individual was blocked from editing Indonesian pages for a while and any that I have edited elsewhere on WP as his activities seems to be verging on stalking. I think he knows well his behaviour is inappropriate but has let things get away from himself. I find his behaviour disappointing, destructive and childish and I hope he manages to stop himself soon. Perhaps he needs some assistance to do that. If you do not have an administrator overview of those articles perhaps you can pass the matter onto someone who does. Thank you and I hope you can assist with this. Felix505 (talk) 04:38, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, I noticed that you are among the many users that wrote on 124x247x221x146 (talk · contribs)'s talk page. I hope you will consider the possibility of having this user blocked. He is engaged in a number of edit wars with other users on airport-related pages. I have placed a 'final warning' template on his talk page and pending your action. Toyotaboy95 - Hong Kong ☺ 12:33, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
- User:124x247x221x146 (talk) / blocked User:124.247.221.146 (talk) has expressed some opinions on the quality of my edits in various places including Talk:Selaparang Airport and Felix505 (talk). I have left a response on my talk) page. If you have a moment you might like to run your eye over it. I notice his edits have slowed down a bit, in volume per day at least. There is still the problem at Ngurah Rai International Airport article in that it has some really dreadfully inaccurate information in the destinations table due to the efforts of User:124x247x221x146 (talk). I would like to fix it but this now triumphant clown will no doubt return and delete it again. So this is how articles end up on WP, screw the facts and the integrity of content, the most belligerent wins the day and we end up with complete rubbish in an article. It is not a good outcome for either accuracy or article integrity. I have put the table deleted by User:124x247x221x146 on the discussion page and generated another table with links to most of the airlines concerned so that the sources could be checked as that user had deleted them earlier. The other source for the table information content was the airport operating authority. I have removed one of the previous external links for flight info from the article as it went to a 404 error page. The main airport page (still in external links) has arr/dep info on it.
- I disagree with the decision not to block this person, they are a menace. I am now unwilling to edit correct information into the pages concerned as this person will not doubt come and delete making it a pointless exercise. I have looked over his histories and it is clear he has a dubious past with what appears to be a 24/7 disputation and edit warring history and that his current user identity is masking a dubious past. I also assume his short history as User:124x247x221x146 (talk) /blocked User:124.247.221.146 (talk) gives indication that there are blocks on his previous user name/s. Again thank you for your input and assistance and my apologies for bothering you with this again today, perhaps this needs further review. Felix505 (talk) 04:14, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
- I tried a couple of edits on Ngurah Rai International Airport today as I hoped User:124x247x221x146 (talk) had managed to calm done. He reverted every edit I made. So I stopped editing again. I have left a response to him on Ngurah Rai International Airport page and I have left a couple of messages on User talk:MilborneOne (section-124x247x221x146) seeking his assistance in establishing an IP block on this individual. My reasons are detailed there as I do not wish to burden you with being a go-between. I am of course happy to talk with either of you about this but I thought it best to burden him with the heavy lifting as you seemed to be referring to him already. It is up to you as administrators of course but frankly I think this guy is a couple of biscuits short of a full pack and he is downright belligerent to boot. I cannot edit with him around. He just deletes. Sorry to be banging on your door again, perhaps you could run your eye over my talk page and Ngurah Rai International Airport and it's discussion page. Thanks. Felix505 (talk) 11:15, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
I have protected the article from editing for the moment as users contine to edit war, hope this will encourage some discussion. MilborneOne (talk) 13:21, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
Hi Mjroots, can you please have a look over my edit proposal on the Destinations table of the Ngurah Rai International Airport article and the addition of a weblink in the External sites section. I have painstakingly reviewed the content of the airline and destination content, found some more oversights and errors including a couple of my own and really I can see no reason why anyone would object to that content if it were uploaded now. I am certainly not infallible but it is a vast improvement on what I found there originally. The result of 124xxx's editing is still there and although he did return a couple of my edit details the bulk of them remain deleted and the table is really quite inaccurate and misleading. I have draw attention to a couple of entries that could benefit from your overview as to the appropriateness of them being in the table. I have also supplied a table with the airlines URL's and a full breakdown of the edits with the sources and reasons for changing the original table and the current version on the page edited by 124xxx. I hope you are able to find the time to have a look at it. I have left a copy of this message with MilborneOne as well. If either of you have great issue with the formatting I have used then please do not bother to consult with me on it as it will just delay the process of getting some accuracy into the table. If you really don't like it or have some issue with it then just go ahead and change it. It is after all (normally) a work in progress. Thanks. Felix505 (talk) 16:01, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Wind Jet 243
Hi Mjroots, yes it looks that you mis-read the translation of google traslator:
- Translation: Around 200 people were stranded on Sicily for two days due to the ferry MV Palladio suffering a breakdown and being forced to remain at Agrigento while repairs were carried out.
- Facts: Around 200 people were stranded on Lampedusa (one of the small islands of Sicily) because there where no flights Palermo-Lampedusa and at the same time the over-night ferry MV Palladio in service on the route Porto Empedocle (near Agrigento, Sicily) to Lampedusa had suffered a breakdown (anchor not working) and was forced to remain in P.E. while repairs were carried out.
Now, A) 200 people stranded in Lampedusa are a tiny minority of the people affected by this accident when over 40 flights had to be diverted (85%) or cancelled. B) The breakdown of the ferry was only a coincidence that made things worse for those stranded on the small island C) I think you made a bit of confusion between Sicily, "Mainland" (Italy) and the Islands of Sicily. It will be my pleasure to help you with the article...btw, have a look at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Wind Jet Flight 243. Ciao!--Sal73x (talk) 03:13, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- About the 200 of Lampedusa, I would leave this bit out of the article because as them many other people were stranded in Rome, Milan and Venice and had no cover from the media. Being stuck in a tourist resort (even if an island) is better than being stuck in grey Milan ;-). Either of those people (who on Lamp. and who in Milan/Rome) reached Palermo 2 days later by plane. Why mention the first and ignore the seconds? I have added two reference (1 in english and 1 in italian) about flights diverted to TPS and CTA.--Sal73x (talk) 06:48, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Mjroots, here are two more articles about "Flight 243", here1 and here2 that could be useful for reference. BTW, if you should need any help in the future to translate something (news or wikiarticles) from italian to english just give me a shout.--Sal73x (talk) 15:58, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Geotags
Geo Links and Geograph
There are problems with your suggestion- which is the reason I haven't done it. There is a discussion forum Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates that is discussing the whole thing. The crux is that many people are unhappy if the link goes to one site, no matter how useful, and believes that the link should only go to GeoHack, where the reader can choose the map they want. There are a lot of unhappy people there. I have a problem with the way we are doing the conversion. It looks great, but if we edit either gridref or the location then the other doesn't change. In looking for a solution, I have been looking at the maths and a lot doesn't add up, this coupled with the volatility of forum, I have been hanging back. ClemRutter (talk) 18:32, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hello there, and thanks for the contact. To me this looks good, but (and it is a big but) I'm afraid the issue appears more complex and contentious than I had first anticipated. I'm also not particularly "clued-up" about which system is good and which is bad, which seems to be part of an ongoing debate. All I know is that there should be a standard system, and these should be included as part of the text for settlements in the UK. Have you taken this to Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates? -- Jza84 · (talk) 23:15, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Checking inline geotags
- Now the accuracy of OStoWiki has been corrected (+/- 2m) all previous references may need tweaking.
- The GeoHack tool now has a new interface and at the bottom of the GB section, under the dangerously inaccurate grid reference is a fantastic tool called Map of all Coordinates in article.
- I tried it on the Loose stream, and because of it I I'm going to make another tweak to OStoWiki.

Oscoor
Thanks for the reminder. Although I use OS maps within multimap to find things, multimap gives DMS output, and the numbering of the OS gridlines in the display tends to be hidden; so I tend to think I'm not ever going to use {{oscoor}}. However your intervention did cause me to go back and read the national grid system article, so as to understand the resolution of various lengths of OS coordinate. As I would not have done this without your intervention; thanks! --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:41, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

West Mill @ Regency Square, Brighton
Hi Mj. All the sources I'm consulting at the moment say it was a post mill, but the New Encyclopaedia of Brighton intriguingly says it "may have been rebuilt in 1762". (But with no more detail than that!) I've added as much as I can about the mill in the History paragraph; do add further info if you can. For the narrative flow, it may be better to keep it as part of the History section rather than creating a separate subsection. I'll be editing the article for the next ~3 hours, then will resume tomorrow sometime. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 19:28, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

- I've come to the conclusion that Hemming got the mill type wrong, there was no smock mill. I've rewritten the bit about the windmill. There may have been two mills on the site; the first was there in 1744 but may have gone by 1762, with another having been built by 1765 and moved in 1797 - either that, or Ogilby missed the mill and there was a mill on site continuously from 1744-97. License for Image:Image:Stiens 1974-1.jpg
The image :Image:Stiens 1974-1.jpg is a candidate to be copied to the Wikimedia Commons. When you uploaded this image, you licensed it for use under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). On behalf of the Misplaced Pages and Commons communities, thank you. However, the GFDL requires that reproductions of the image (and any other GFDL-licenced works), must be accompanied by the full text of the GFDL. The GFDL is intended more for documentation and not images, so downstream re-users may be hindered by additional restrictions of the GFDL which may not work well on the use of one image.
Before I copy this image to the Commons, I wanted to ask whether you would be willing to multilicense your work under an additional license, such as a Creative Commons licence. Creative Commons licences, such as the Attribution Share-Alike license provide a similar copyleft permission to the GFDL, but without some of its requirements such as the distribution of the licence text. All you need to do, is place the additional license tag alongside your current license. Users can choose between which one they want to use the image under. There are many free licenses accepted on Misplaced Pages and Commons which can provide freedoms similar to the GFDL, but without some of its requirements.
You are under no obligation whatsoever to alter the license. Doing so merely cooperates with those members of the community who believe that multilicensing your work can ease the reuse of images outside of Misplaced Pages.
If you use a GFDL license tag which requires distribution of Misplaced Pages's general disclaimer (indicated by "Subject to disclamiers" in the template), it is also suggested that you switch it to one which does not apply them.
Whether or not you choose to dual-license your work, thank you for your consideration.

Speedy deletion of Image:Horse tram, Southampton.jpg
A tag has been placed on Image:Horse tram, Southampton.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Misplaced Pages have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on ] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. BG 13:24, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with File:SS LESBIAN (3).jpg
Thanks for uploading File:SS LESBIAN (3).jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Misplaced Pages's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Misplaced Pages can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}}
(to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by STBotI. For assistance on the image use policy, see Misplaced Pages:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 17:34, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
HMS Archer (D78)
Thanks for your message on my talk page . My memory of image uploads from four years ago is more than a little hazy, but I will try to help as best I can. Searches at Haze Gray and the Naval Historical Center turned up nothing quite like the photo in question, but I think I found it at NavSource . The image there has "IWM" listed for "Contributed By And/Or Copyright." Today I presume that stands for the Imperial War Museum, but back in 2005 I probably did not know and just assumed it fell under the "Or Images Believed To Be In The Public Domain" listed on the site's copyright information page . However four years later (and with a significantly better understanding of WP:IUP), I recognize that is not a good assumption to make. I also tried searching the Imperial War Museum web site, but while I found a similar photo , I could not find this image.
How do you feel we should proceed from here? My recollection is that after uploading around a dozen images of escort carriers in September 2005, I decided that my understanding of IUP was not nuanced enough and I stopped. These images should probably be reviewed and deleted as necessary. I will double-check with a MILHIST coordinator and if they concur, I will start sometime this week. Thank you for uploading File:MV Danny F II.JPG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Misplaced Pages takes copyright very seriously. Bradford City Hall
Hi. Thanks for your question. I'm ashamed to say I've never been to Bradford City Hall, even though I wrote the article on it. I'd love to go. I did speak to a local journo who said that it was OK to take photos in there, though. (Some town halls are a bit weird about photos; no-one has told them about panoramafreiheit.) Anyway, what I could do for you is to phone Bradford Council tomorrow and if I'm lucky I'll get some bored employee who would just love to leave their desk and look at the windows. People never look at anything, and you can bet your life someone is working beneath your window day in, day out, and hasn't noticed it. If I forget, keep reminding me until I do it. It would be a fun job to go and photograph it. I need to do a winter photo of Bradford Industrial Museum, anyway - you can't see the jolly thing for trees in summer.--Storye book (talk) 21:09, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
- Update: I rang Bradford City Hall, and they had not heard of any such memorial window. Someone kindly investigated for me, and they rang back today and said that it's a mistake, and there is no architectural feature such as a memorial window dedicated to this lady. There is a movable installation within the building, incorporating a display dedicated to her and to other local heroes. I'm told that this is in a public place and that I can visit it. I shall photograph that for you when I can - hopefully during the next couple of weeks - but I'm sorry there is no window to photograph. I guess that there is a slight possibility that there may be a memorial window in a church somewhere, and that could explain the error, but I don't know how to investigate that.--Storye book (talk) 11:05, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. I've just heard that I may be able to visit the City Hall tomorrow. I'll see what I can do.--Storye book (talk) 12:10, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- Update: Just letting you know that because Coronation Street is filming in the building for the next two weeks, it will not be permissible for me to get into the building to see the display which includes B.J. Harrison. The staff have tried to fix it for me today, but cannot. I'll try to do it in two or three weeks' time, though. If I appear to be delaying or forgetting, please kindly give me a reminder. Thanks.--Storye book (talk) 10:42, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Tudeley and treacle
Hi there.
The problem with the treacle mine entry is that although it is amusing it does not add much to the general content of the page.
If you were to expand the Tudeley article to include a lot more information about the place, and then add your (quite amusing) treacle mine ref for good measure I would have no problem.
But when the article is just 120-odd words in length, to devote 10% of them to treacle mines seems disproportionate to me.
Best wishes

Hiya,
No, I didn't..what a time to be on holiday and not see the 'frickin' article on BBC! Thankfully they've posted the piece on the web. As far as I know, they think, with some justification, that it's a D017, but there doesn't appear to be a definite identification of it being THE D017 in my article, although the circumstantial evidence seems strong. Being local, I'm hoping to talk to the guys featured and see if I can find out some specifics. I'll pass on what I can but as this would constitute original research, I guess I can only point interested readers to other external content like the BBC Kent page :-( Bummer! List of museums in Kent
Hi, thank you for adding to the list, but I am working on it as well and we seem to be overlapping. Please leave the type "mill" for all grinding mills, including windmills and watermills, as this is the category name for Category:Mill museums in England. The type of mill can be noted in the summary. Also, Down House is located Downe in what is now the London Borough of Bromley and is not considered to be in Kent. I will continue to update the museum listings with complete information. Jllm06 (talk) 20:21, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Hobart 2020 Bid
So please allow me to clear something up. It is ok for other users to edit pages with no knowledge at all of the material that is posted on the page, yet when somebody with the knowledge edits it with relevant sources to back the information up, it gets deleted and that is ok with that user then being threatened? The information on the 2020 Summer Olympics page was vandalised by somebody claiming it to be an April Fools joke then it was removed completely due to this (check the edits) and then it is falsely claimed by another user to be illegitame and 'not taken seriously' despite the obvious references to it being a legitimate bid? Brisbane has no intent to bid for the 2020 Olympics yet it remains on the page, so tell me, where is the fairness in this involved?
NYC 55david (talk) 12:48, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- I suggest you get your facts right NYC 55david! I never said it was an April Fools joke nor did I vandalise the article, I also have given you a very good reason in the edit summary why it shouldn't be added and I have better things to do then reverting self promotional crap. (Posted also to Australia and Tasmania project talk pages)
- Ahah legitimacy - a few people in Tasmania are capable of creating a semblance of legitimacy by having a web page presence, facebook page and a few newspaper articles on an item - I would suggest information is never particularly straight forward - the actual proposal was in fact an april fools joke (the state of Tasmania has less than 500.000 population - the prospect of an isolated state on the outer side of the planet being capable of attracting either the money, facility or infrastructure for such a bid is close to absurd) - to give credence to the gullible - facebook, and newspaper cites alone may look 'good' and 'valid' - but ahh, I used to live in a part of Tasmania that had the marvellous total population of less then 5,000 people at any one time in the last 50 years.
- The interesting thing is it did start out as a joke - see http://www.gamesbids.com/eng/olympic_bids/future_bids_2016/1216135135.html - and like chinese whispers and good media stories that run beyond the original intent and take on a life of their own - there are people who move it up a rung to try to keep the story going - I would suggest that any inclusion of such an item needs to be qualified specifically as to what it started out as - and that the probability of anyone in Australia being prepared to support the bid as being next not nothing and not even something a betting person could even start to make odds on - Tasmanians cannot even vote on a clear majority government Tasmanian state election, 2010 due to the Hare-Clark voting system, I suspect they will be preoccupied with many other things other than finding the finance for Olympic bids in the near future SatuSuro 13:52, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
B&H template
Stations: tempting, but people might think I'd gone mad! I decided to keep them in the other Brighton and Hove template (Template:Brighton and Hove) because their transport function is more relevant than their status as a building (although Portslade is, admittedly, Grade II-listed). All the redlinks should fill up over the next few weeks, all being well! Cheers, Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 17:11, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- Tsk, I misread my source... thanks for spotting that! Maybe I was subconsciously thinking about my local windmill, which I visited on Sunday... Incidentally, the New Encyclopaedia of Brighton (just published, hence my rush of Brighton-ish articles) identifies almost 20 past and present mills in the present city area. Could be worth a "Windmills in Brighton and Hove"-type article in future, so look out for that (if I ever get a chance!). Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 18:14, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Spitsbergen, yet again
Hello, it’s this again. The RfC has gone quiet, and I’m not sure how these things are supposed to resolve, so I’ve been bold and posted the draft section.
I’m mindful I didn’t acknowledge your comment on the sandbox draft; were you suggesting that Spitzbergen is currently a common alternative spelling, or that it has been in the past? If the first, I’d agree, personally, but I get the impression it’s a minority opinion, so for the sake of neutrality I left it out. If the second, I’d hoped I’d said that by saying Sp z "became the English spelling thereafter", but I can firm it up.
Anyway, we shall see what happens...Xyl 54 (talk) 23:54, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi, and sorry I had to revert your edit with the geobox. Easy to miss these things when scrolling through. No harm done though. As for the template, I think it may be a little too involved for somewhere as small as Wormshill. I'm pretty sure it's not a high-traffic page and the related content links probably don't need to be collated in a template. Not sure if it would jeopardise its FA status either as the powers that be can be a bit tetchy about these kinds of things. I'll hold off for now. I do think it's quite a neat little feature for some of the larger towns and cities though and thanks for your continuing input/interest. Dick G (talk) 15:46, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

River Len
Mike I feel quite pleased with myself! I had found the relatively new Geobox|rivers at River Trent and investigated. You will now see the result at this article (I took an easy one first!). There may well be other information - I couldn't work out the coordinates, and in any case a river covers more than one; couldn't find the exact length; and dunno if there is anywhere to be able to get flow rates etc. You may well be able to add more tributaries - I took the ones you had alraedy mentioned under the mills. None of the blanks come out until you give some information. I had also discovered the exact location of the source - a historical document on the Medway; I'm sure you also know more about its course, although perhaps that isn't too important. Peter Peter Shearan (talk) 21:20, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Mill symbols
As you see I have put two new symbols into your sandbox article. Just a quick fix. Using mills in this way is quite an extension. Come September we need to define what symbols we need- mills with weirs for example, millponds goits. I have been visiting the Dark Peak and realise how much more important water engineering was in the 1780s and the growth of the Cotton Industry. Still I am taking a break now. ClemRutter (talk) 08:31, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- I have been talking with guys at WP:RIVERS and trying to work out what icon system to recommend. In a nutshell, the cyan worms are out, rivers are dark blue unless you need to differentiate- then non-navigable are light blue and navigable are darkblue. but I am still working on it. You have source at the top. River Len, Kent seems to be correct. See also Manchester Ship Canal for an upside down example. Medway diagram
This takes a little thought. I like diagrams- very useful for showing mill locations- but there is a convention on canals that navigable should be darkblue and non navigable light blue. The tails as steams meet the river seem clunky. I have been concerned about the representation of reservoirs for some time- is a reservoir navigable or not- how do you show the dam bypass channel. In the simple case: a truncated salami would do- but they often are constructed at the confluence of several rivers. A lot of icons need some thought- and that will take a little time- I will put it on the list. (Some mills are on the wrong bank but that is minor). --ClemRutter (talk) 11:56, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- I have put in far too many hours playing with the diagram on my talk page. Please look over- and see if there is anything to add- you will need to proof read the position of the mills relative to the new locks, and the addition of the Beult and the two mouths of the Teise. I have added some new icons to Template:Waterways legend particularly putting curved dams on reservoirs. --ClemRutter (talk) 19:27, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
To be positive: it is getting there. A few of your changes I don"t like. A river is a hydrographical item, as well as cultural one. The first uncollapsed diagram needs to stand in its own right, and give the reader basic infomation about its course. The collapsed bits need to show the twidddly bits, that the Teise at Yalding has bifurcated, and where mills were situated. When the course is a navigation we need info on the locks. Background colour needs to show whether the river is tidal, a navigation, or non-navigable. The section names are taken from the NRA, and are used by the waterways community- I don't think Lower Mid Upper is really informative. The whole diagram (uncollapsed) needs to be complete and informative in itself. I think that we should do another round of rollbacks and improvement then wrap it in a template and ask the WP:RIVERS for comment on any points where policy decisions need to be made. I would like to use it as a model to be attached to their policy page. I then want to code up the River Etherow, Irk, Irwell, Medlock, Goyt can't you just smell the cotton. --ClemRutter (talk) 13:08, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, width is critical when using collapsable box- expand all the section to see it isn't broken by the change. Titles a lot better- I took one look and thought- I knew I was about to to do that-- but I can't remember having done it. These wretched dock icons look awful- I am going to redo them- I cant see why a narrow dock should be five times wider than the river. I am more concerned about the length if the diagram, then allowing the diagram to be included in Kent pages that make a mention to the Medway. Then into Infoboxes.I am uploading images along the commons:Portland Basin- Ashton Canal at the moment.--ClemRutter (talk) 11:40, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

True. There is a limit to the sort of ship you can drive under Rochester Bridge. I think the commissioner of HM Dockyard would agree with me. Template:River Waveney map
Hi. I notice you have updated the River Waveney map, but was a little surprised to see that it now runs from south to north. One of the problems of the transposition is that several of the adjoining rivers are now shown on the wrong side. Oulton Broad should be on the other side, as should the River Yare, and the Haddiscoe cut is no longer clearly labelled. I was going to try to sort it out but am a bit short of time at the moment. Bob1960evens (talk) 18:52, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
- I am back from holiday now, and have moved Oulton Broad, Haddiscoe Cut and the River Bure back to where they should be, corrected the direction of the locks, and produced a windmill symbol for the windmills. However, I have no sources for which side of the river the windmills should be on, and as the river and Haddiscoe Cut have now been transposed, wondered if you could just check them. Thanks. Avrazya
You did so much work on the Mariam, that I hope that you will help edit an article for the Avrazya, the ship that was hijacked by Islamist militants in the Black sea in 1996 Black Sea hostage crisis.AMuseo (talk) 16:41, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you. I used google translate, but while it has this ship being converted for use as a car ferry, sold to Trukey and sailing out of Trabizond, which was the port form this the ferry was departing when the hijacking took place, the sale was in 1997. the hijacking was in 1996. Moreover the name is wrong. It says "1997 05th Sold to Karden Line, Istanbul, Turkey. Renamed KARGEM." Further down the page we find "2000th Sold to Trabzon Birlesik Denizcilik ve Ticaret, Turkey. Renamed AVRASYA II." So it looks as though this was the second Avrasya owned by a Turkish shipping or ferry-operating firm. And that we are looking for a different ship that was already in Turkey and called the Avrasya in 1996.AMuseo (talk) 19:35, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Although it is a low quality scan, you can see the name Avrasya on the ship as you look at the photo which was taken in 1996 carefully. (I can see only 7 letters, but I cannot see 8 letters on it.) Belgica
Hi Mjroots, Yep, the source you used says that between 1916 and 1917 she was called Isfjord, but a number of Norwegian sources I've looked at (here's a newspaper article, for example, here's another mention) say that in 1918 or so she was renamed back to Belgica by her new owner, Kristian Holst. The scuttling cause is probably the correct one, though, as I can't find info on the ship being sunk by German aircraft in the book Flyalarm by Sten Stenersen, which is a recognised work on the air war over Norway. Harstad was bombed on the 19th, but she is not listed among the sunken ships. She might have been damaged that day, though, which may have led to later misunderstandings. I now also think she was scuttled, in June 1940 when the Franco-British forces pulled out of Norway. WIll go and change that.
With regards to the linked article, I couldn't agree more. I was thinking about splitting them myself, and then expand the original Belgica.
By the way, there's something I been thinking of asking you for a while now, what system do you use when you name ship articles where the ship has had more than one name? That's something that often causes me some headache.
Cheers! Manxruler (talk) 17:53, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the help with regards to ship names. I keep finding sources that say Belgica was sunk in Brurvika Bay near Harstad on 19 May (an example with a reference, so I think the present solution, with both possible causes of loss presented, is the best one. Manxruler (talk) 21:43, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- Great work on the Belgica article. One very important thing, though: The ship wasn't scuttled by the Franco-British Expeditionary forces when they evacuated from Harstad on 19 May because they didn't withdraw from Harstad on 19 May. The allies only left Harstad around 7-8 June 1940, when they withdrew fully from Norway. So that combination of sources (one for the probable scuttling and one for the date) doesn't work. We have to find another way of doing that section. If scuttling is the way to go, and I think both causes really should be mentioned, then we can't use the 19 May date. Manxruler (talk) 20:42, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds good. What I'll do then is to search for sources on the Allied evacuation of Harstad (the evacuation was linked to Operation Alphabet), and see if the date of the evacuation can be added. I'll also keep on looking for sources on Belgica in 1940. I too believe the likely course of events to have been that she was bombed on the 19th (probably damaged, beached even), and then scuttled when the Allies withdrew. I believe my addition was appropriate, as an issue that is Misplaced Pages wide. Is there an appropriate venue to discuss this, such as the talk page or WP:AN? Mjroots (talk) 11:04, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
- The talkpage of the source of the conflict is acceptable - no need to move the venue. Misplaced Pages:Requests for comment is a common place to announce a discussion on article content, as are the talkpages of any related WikiProjects, and perhaps a request for input on the talkpage of any relevant guidelines where editors experienced in such matters are likely to come forward. Your discussion at ANI
Hi - just wanted to say sorry I missed the discussion you raised earlier regarding disruption at AFD, as I completely agree with you. There are some editors, not just the one you referred to, who seem to take any opposing view personally, and feel the need to argue against it. This applies to other !vote discussions as well as AFD, eg RFA. The problem is that there isn't currently ant guidelines against this, just good essays such as WP:STICK. Perhaps some sort of bahavioural guideline about this could be put written with this in mind, stating that querying one or two opposing views is acceptable, whereas querying most or all could be considered disruptive. I'd certainly support any such guideline.
Meanwhile, hope you don't feel to stressed about the issue. Keep up the good work! — Tivedshambo (t/c) (logged on as Pek) 19:36, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
- Hey, I feel the urge to justify my closing the discussion, it's the least you deserve since the thread was brought in nothing but good faith. First of all, for the stated purpose of the thread, I applaud that you brought it, checking in with the community is an important way to get a quick sanity check when you're unsure of something - it's why there are so many self-brought block reviews posted on ANI, people recognize the value of it. The response came in at snowy levels, which, while indicative of consensus, wouldn't have been worthy of a boxing of the thread. That came about because of the bickering and sniping going on between Mick and a couple editors. Basically, the discussion found he did nothing wrong in the XfD's, but as a consequence of that discussion he started toeing up to the civil line and others were pretty clearly baiting him to try and get him to step over it. When an editor is caught up in that sort of situational double entendre its best to just let everything cool down- It's hardly fair to punish someone for their response to a request for sanctions about an incident that wasnt worthy of sanctions in the first instance. Don't interpret this as me sheltering Mick from anything. If you're willing to look back 3 or 4 years ago (around this time), you'll find Mick wasn't always the deletionist he's cast to be - When myself and others began enforcing the WMF licensing policy and removing screen shots from lists of episode articles to correct gratuitous fair use image abuse, he directed quite a bit of his anger at myself. I shrugged it off. I've edited as an IP since 2004, have had this account since 2005, and have seen a lot of angry, angry users. Mick is ornery but he's not a troll and his intent is to improve the project. That earns you a lot of toleration. We are willing to put up with a lot of shit if you have a genuine desire and ability to help build a free/libre reference work on your own time for the benefit of all humanity. Take a Carl Sagan moment to think about the implications of what we are all doing here right now and it helps bridge the differences between contributors. There's a lot less separating us and all our different views and a lot more bringing us together and for that reason alone it means we are all deserving of a bit of respect from each other, at least enough to do a fellow contributor a favor by not letting him shoot himself in the foot. -- ۩ Mask 20:10, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

- Profoundly embarrassingly silent - (like many projects that hide their inactivity) - some time back I somewhat put a few noses out by claiming that over-tag by some established ships members of shipwrecks article exhibited nothing short of profound ignorance (but I said it a bit more circuitously) - as the scope and overlap issue made the over-tagging absurd - but I seemed to be facing the barrel of a milhist/ships mafia hit squad - so I simply shrugged and walked off - then since after my absence off wp while i was travelling last year I have noticed little or no activity - apart from the odd message - similar to the Australian maritime history project that I started - I personally still believe the overlapping issue to be one of fairly absurd proportions - bit like some other projects who take their scope a little too literally - but as for anyone who might pop up at the talk page - I have no idea, I suspect little or no reaction might be the possibility - probably better just to do something - specially if it gives some possible life to the shipwreck cause :( SatuSuro 12:39, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

If I had left the pipe at the end, that was accidental - I had been attempting to add "inline", to try to get it to appear as a text line instead of a box, then I would have put it under "See also" subheading. However I couldn't remember how to do that. So far, none of my non-Wikipedian friends and acquaintances have been able to see or find the commonscat box in a Wiki article, even when I tell them it's at the bottom right of the article page. Lists of abbeys and priories in England
Thanks for your suggestion. The reason for the current format is the limitation of the Misplaced Pages formatting which limits the number of references which can be used in a single page. I have considered alternatives (such as excluding some details from the England page so that they are only visible in the county pages, but that does not remedy the shortcomings to any great extent given the number of references). At one time the England page was made by one contributor into virtually just a list of counties with links to the county lists - which really just undermined the subject and purpose of the page, which is to provide a list of all the establishments in England. JohnArmagh (talk) 20:39, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
Actually the List of windmills in the Netherlands illustrates precisely what I mean - it isn't actually a list of Windmills in the Netherlands, but a list of lists of windmills in the Netherlands. In the List of abbeys and priories in England there are in fact no duplicate lists to be deleted - the individual county lists are each transclusions in the England list - the problem comes because Misplaced Pages limits the total number of transclusions and references, meaning the one page had to be split alphabetically by county. Each of the counties in England has a sufficiently large list to warrant an individual list for that county, and it is that list, rather than a duplication of it, which is transcluded into the main page. JohnArmagh (talk) 19:40, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
The red links in List of abbeys and priories in England – Counties B-K demonstrate what happens when more references are included on a page than the Wiki software can currently cope with. That is why I had to split the page in the first place, and why I had to limit List of abbeys and priories in England to just the counties from B to D instead of B to K. JohnArmagh (talk) 19:55, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
On what page is there a red link to List of abbeys and priories in Kent? I am unaware of ever using that page name. (If you scroll down page List of abbeys and priories in England – Counties B-K you will see a large number of red links where the pages exist. There is nothing wrong with the syntax, as the page suggests, rather it is (as I have diagnosed) that there are simply too many references on the page, and the syntax is not being correctly interpreted by the software.) JohnArmagh (talk) 21:10, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
- The way around that is to have individual reference lists for each section, rather than one big one at the end. You don't need any fancy group stuff, just put
{{reflist|close=1}}
- at the bottom of each section, and it'll gather together all undisplayed references, display them, then "close" the list so that the ref sequence starts again at . --Redrose64 (talk) 11:10, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
As I said before, the redlinks are caused by limitations of the software which makes the software read the syntax as a page which does not exist.
Yes, the redlink page does not exist, but that is because the software is misreading the name of the page, not because the name of the page it should be reading (given that the syntax itself is correct) does not exist.
This is how the syntax which transcludes the Kent list appears on this (your talk page (because the limit of references has not been exceeded):-

However, because of the shortcomings of the software (I'm a programmer, so I do know how to diagnose the nature of an issue, even if I am unable to read the source code) it is reading the name of the page as localurl:List of monastic houses in Kent when it should not be reading "localurl:" as part of the page name. QE
You added an edit war warning to my talk page without good reason. Since you obviously have difficulty counting beyond the number two (I have only ever made two edits to the QE page, and not on the same day or even on successive days) the warning about edit wars and three reverts per day was both inappropriate and aggressive, since a study of the record will show that I have never, ever made three edits on any single day to any article. You are reminded that even administrators are obliged to show good faith. You should apologise for a hasty and unwarranted intervention.
Afterwards you might turn your attention to the text of the QE article. Much of it (and esp the service history section) reads almost like a PR handout from the shipping line. I do sometimes wonder if some contributors (unlike myself) are Cunard or Carnival employees or PR staff. George.Hutchinson (talk) 13:56, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for locking Sark. It would be of assistance if someone else could look at the sources cited. I've been trying to persuade La.coupee to come up with sources that contradict the Guernsey sources, but for some reason there's something personal creeping in. - Oh, I agree. Very sensible action on your part. I'd taken a little wiki-break before you took action, anyway, as the situation was becoming too silly to continue, and I'm only coming back today because there's some work I need to do an a completely unrelated topic. Thanks again. Man vyi (talk) 09:43, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
