Matharu or Matharoo (ਮਠਾੜੂ in Gurmukhī script) is a prominent Sikh clan belonging to the Ramgarhia and Jat tribe.
Etymology
The word Matharu originated from the Sanskrit word mathar which means "stanchion".
Origins
The Matharu clan originated from Punjab. They were eventually accepted into the Jatt and Tarkhan community taking up carpentry and agriculture.
They were skilled artisans in the craft of woodwork, ivory and ebony inlay work and ironcraft.
Scholars such as H. A. Rose believe that they are descended from the Sakas, the Kushans and the Huns. According to the Manu Smriti, the Sakas are originally of Kshatriya descent.
The Matharu clans of West Punjab claim Jadaun (also spelt Jadon) ancestry from Rajputs. They are found in Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar and Patiala districts. In Hindu culture, the Jadaun are a clan (gotra) of Chandravanshi (Yaduvanshi) Rajputs found in North India and Pakistan.
Matharus also have historical connection with Nanda and are also mentioned Lions of Punjab.
