Sources for Rene Lachemann

Hello, good work on Rene Lachemann, and thanks for the contribution. However, you did not provide any references or sources in the article. Keeping Misplaced Pages accurate and verifiable is very important, and as you might be aware there is currently a push to encourage editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. Can you list in the article any websites, books, or other sources that will allow people to verify the content in Rene Lachemann? You can simply add links, or see Citation templates for different citation methods. Thanks! --best, kevin 02:28, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Baseball

Hey there. Seeing how we tread a lot of the same ground, I can't believe we haven't crossed paths before. It doesn't look like anyone's ever extended an invitation for you to join us at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Baseball. Consider this your invitation. We're a group of (very) loosely-organized editors who have a special interest in the sport. Aside from editing articles, we also help to set the content guidelines for baseball-related articles. Feel free to join in on any of the discussions. Cheers, Caknuck (talk) 00:51, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Your edit summary usage

Hi there. When editing an article on Misplaced Pages there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field. If you are adding a section, please do not just keep the previous section's header in the Edit summary field - please fill in your new section's name instead. Thank you. 1961 Cincinnati Reds season

Good job on adding the roster to that. I'm not really sure why you put   in front of each jersey number, though.   jj137 (talk) 16:55, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Lum Harris

Hello, I have again reverted your deletion of his nickname, as it is customary to provide both the given name and nickname if commonly used. See WP:NAMES. Also, it would help others if you would start using the Edit Summary. Thanks. JGHowes - 18:43, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi, JGH. I will use the edit summary in future. Re. Harris, whose bio page I created ca. 2005, I deleted the Lum for a couple of reasons; he is also known in baseball resource books by his full middle name of Luman and because the diminutive form, Lum, can be easily deduced from the name Luman. I checked the Wiki naming conventions and think I am within bounds here. But I defer to the will of the community, of course.

News from the diamond
From the Editors

Baseball has a history unlike any other sport. It has been played in countless countries throughout the decades, and it will undoubtedly continue play for many more. On this eve, some the finest players the sport has to offer will take the field at the Yankee Stadium. Four popes spoke there, Pelé scored goals there, "The Greatest Game Ever Played" was battled out there, John Philip Sousa lead a band there, George Costanza worked there; but what do all these events have in common? They fail to reach the level of greatness that the baseball that was played there did.

In 1923, a man named Babe Ruth decided to build a new house, and over the years, that house was a home to some of the greatest baseball ever played. If I were to list out all of these great moments, it would be longer than the bill for the New Yankee Stadium. So I'll sum it up by saying that we can remember these great moments by adding them to this place we've gathered at for future generations to read about, to learn about, to dream about; but more importantly we can watch tonight and we can remember how baseball is unlike anything else that we will encounter in our lives. — Blackngold29

Baseball-ref bullpen

Hi. I am enjoying some of the articles you've written on baseball players so keep it up! Just a quick note that we generally don't link to the baseball-reference bullpen site since it's an unreliable site and a haven for some of our banned users. Thanks and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. —Wknight94 (talk) 02:26, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

OK, I will stop linking; I realize it is their wiki. But I generally use it for second references when I have data from better sources and can confirm at least the managerial records they post there. (McGill1974)

Oh, I bet if they had their act together and made good articles, they'd be a great source for leads to information, but their information should never be cited directly. I've found a few mentions of books on their site that sound interesting, but I'd always cite the book itself... —Wknight94 (talk) 23:07, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Tommy/Tom Heath

Obviously these two articles need merging, but the player in question is listed at Baseball Reference as Tommy Heath, not Tom. Is he listed as Tom somewhere else? -Dewelar (talk) 21:17, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Baseball Reference is certainly a reputable source, but The Minor League Encyclopedia, published by Baseball America, and the Sporting News' Annual Baseball Guides list him as Tom. This is a not uncommon problem, as Misplaced Pages identifies Frank Crosetti as Frankie, and he's called Frank in most hardcopy source materials. McGill1974 (talk) 00:39, 28 September 2008 (UTC)McGill1974

I just checked over at MLB.com, and they have him listed as Tommy. -Dewelar (talk) 01:15, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Tommy it is, then. Thanks. McGill1974 (talk) 01:35, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

No worries. Do you want to merge the articles, or shall I? -Dewelar (talk) 01:41, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

I've never merged an article before, so if you have time, that would be great. Heath's an interesting guy; he's one of the handful of people who played roles in turning around the Giants' farm system after WW2 into perhaps the best (although unsung) in the game in the 1950s. McGill1974 (talk) 12:56, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

All set, and thanks again for the original heads-up. I could probably be more careful about checking alternate names when doing article creation. -Dewelar (talk) 17:07, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Team-season roster sections

I notice that occasionally, when you update or add rosters to various team season pages (most recently the 1978 Chicago Cubs season), you sometimes overwrite and (I presume unintentionally) remove valid information that I have already added to these pages. This is very good work that you're doing, but I'd like to ask that you please try to be more careful not to do this in the future. Thanks! -Dewelar (talk) 16:32, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Apologies; one interesting item in the rosters is how to include players who have had only a handful of games (such as September callups and early-season cuts) during a season. Some people compiling the rosters include every player, but I have been trying to list players who had a longer tenure with a club, and finished the season with that club. Maybe the longer, comprehensive list is the way to go. However, please understand that I respect your work and will not overwrite your articles. McGill1974 (talk) 17:10, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

I see what you're getting at. At this point, since we don't really have guidelines for inclusion, it's best to include all players, both in the roster section and in the player stats section. My reasoning for this is based on WP:ATHLETE -- that since anyone who played a game in the majors is considered notable, then they are by extension notable enough to be mentioned within team-season articles for any and all teams for which they played. I am thoroughly convinceable otherwise, though. I'd be happy to see you continue to work within any article (after all, I'm also a huge believer in WP:OWN) -- I just wanted to give you a heads-up in case you were doing this inadvertently. However, doing things my way works fine for me, too :) . -Dewelar (talk) 17:46, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Your two points on my talk page

First, I'm really not focused on any team in particular. Basically, what I've been doing is creating player pages, then adding their stats, transactions, and such to each of the related team-season pages. Which page I'm working on depends on what player I've created. Basically, to be safe, I'd say just look for rosters that are empty (there are still a lot of them). For era, I'd say anything pre-1960, as most players I've done have been from the '70s and '80s.

Second, on alphabetical vs. numerical roster order...this is the first time anyone's brought it up to me. I've been using numerical as a default because that's what I remember seeing in publications growing up, and I think it was also what I saw on the first few pages I looked at. However, if a roster is already in alphabetical order when I get to it, I will generally leave it that way. I have no particular preference myself, so I'd have no problem switching up. Even so, I'd say bring it to the wikiproject at large and see if there's a general preference. -Dewelar (talk) 19:59, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Infobox MLB Retired

I noticed you added this template to Pete Whisenant's page. You may not be aware, but this template has been replaced with a redirect to Template:Infobox MLB player, which is now being used for nearly all MLB player articles (the exceptions being the ones who had extensive careers in Japan or elsewhere, for whom Template:Infobox baseball biography might be more appropriate). I've fixed Whisenant, but thought I'd just give you a heads-up. -Dewelar (talk) 01:46, 20 April 2009 (UTC) Thanks! Will do this going forward.McGill1974 (talk)

uniform numbers

I have a bunch of old Baseball Digests, which published uniform numbers of all on-field personnel in the 1950s and 1960s as well as several vintage Baseball Dope Books (Sporting News) which published 40-man rosters including coaches. Also, web sites like Red Sox dieHard, YankeeNumbers.com, Kasey's Cubs Page, Mets by the Numbers, and sites that list all the numbers for the Baltimore Orioles (since 1954) and Minnesota Twins (since 1961). There was an excellent site/blog that compiled numbers for the Cardinals and old St. Louis Browns, but it was taken down in 2006.

To me, Baseball Digests and Dope Books would be the best sources, but it's hard to track down old copies.

Good luck, and I am enjoying the updating of the rosters, if that's what you have been doing. Thanks.McGill1974 (talk) 21:49, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Hey, where are you getting the uniform numbers for the coaches from? I have not been able to find sources for that. Spanneraol (talk) 21:06, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Minor League Tables

Unfortunately I don't think I can be of much help; that template is the only one I know of for that purpose, although you could edit it and add the additional parameters in. Alternately, you could add some sort of footnotes or add something below the table to place additional info.   JJ (talk) 20:21, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Farm System template -- Notes or in-line?

We seem to be working at cross purposes on these. You've been reverting my changes adding "LEAGUE CHAMPION" and such directly into to the template, and I've been reverting your changes adding them as notes at the bottom. I didn't even realize you were the one doing it until I'd changed quite a few of them, because I thought it was an attempt by Ohms law to fix his error in removing them in the first place. I see now that Ohms law has pretty much abandoned it for the time being instead. Since the two of us are now the only ones doing this, we should try to come to some agreement on which way to do it. -Dewelar (talk) 17:22, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Ah, if Spanneraol is working on this as well, perhaps we should move the discussion to the template talk page. -Dewelar (talk) 17:40, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Saw your good edits on the Weiss page. I've just created sections for the page, and moved the Hall of Fame election to the first short paragraph, for emphasis. Does anyone have a photo of Weiss to use on the page? Best, Randy Kryn (talk) 00:49, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello McGill1974! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 3 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 17 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Misplaced Pages:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 03:04, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Marshall wasn't the starting 1st baseman that day as you edited into Marshall's bio. Gil Hodges started that game for the Mets, Marshall made a pinch hitting appearance.

Here's the boxscore for that game.
