On June 3, 2011, EA confirmed the rumors with a press release and a game trailer which was released on their Official YouTube Channel.<ref>* </ref>

The Sims 3 Pets expansion pack includes many new animals such as horses (PC version only), cats, dogs, snakes, lizards, birds and turtles. The player creates their pet in a similar fashion to the 'Create A Sim' feature with many customisation abilities. The player may choose from a selection of breeds for each pet such as Labradors and Kelpies (dogs). There are now traits for pets allowing them to have their own personalities and identities(pets have three traits). Pets can now be controlled similar to sims and have their own skills, quests and interactions. Pets do not have jobs, but they can make money by winning a contest or finding treasure. Pets also do not have lifetime wishes. Dogs and Cats will have more than one baby. The name of the town is Apaloosa Plains and is a ranch type town with billboards and a tourist trap towards the edge of the town. Limited to only the console games, cats and dogs can now learn hunting and collecting skills, along with tricks (only for Xbox 360 Kinect and Nintendo 3DS). The limited edition of The Sims 3 Pets, which must be pre-ordered, includes exclusive exotic pets (Only on the consoles)<ref>{{cite web|title=The Sims 3 Pets|url=http://www.thesims3.com/content/en_US/promo/pets/pets.htm|publisher=EA|accessdate=13 July 2011}}</ref> and a pet shop both of which will not be included in the normal edition of the game.
It has also been proven in a patch for the game that the new creature will be a unicorn unless changed.

On June 8, 2011, Ben Bell gave a presentation and demonstration previewing Pets that was streamed over EA's website.<ref>* </ref> He also answered questions regarding the Expansion Pack. The demonstration contained parts of the game that had never been seen before by the public. The event took place on Wednesday June 8, 2011 at 17:00 UTC.

In their E3 hands-on preview with the Pet Creator Tool, GameMarshal was able to uncover that your pets can mate and produce off-spring, although no cross-species breeding is allowed, genetics would be passed down to pet offspring, and you'll be able to assign unique characteristics to your pets.<ref>* </ref>
