This changed when she entered Second Life, a virtual world MMORPG in which the in-game currency, "Linden Dollars", can be 'officially' exchanged for real money. Players of Second Life can also buy areas of game land, for either in-game or real money; holding land requires an increased subscription fee. Anshe Chung earned an initial stake by selling custom avatar animations at the time while these were a new feature of Second Life, Using this money she participated successfully in the emerging market for land. Anshe Chung now owns over 100 servers worth of land, most of which are rented or sold to other users.
Anshe also exercises control over what may be placed on these land areas, ensuring that zoning rules are obeyed; this is a contrast from other land in Second Life which is unzoned, creating common difficulties where multiple different types of business or housing are located in adjacent areas. Philip Rosedale, the CEO of Linden Lab - the company that produces Second Life - has referred to Anshe as "the government" when referring to the role she plays on her zoned continent "Dreamland". This has been misunderstood by some as Rosedale referring to her as the government of all of SL.
Anshe also buys and sells Linden Dollars for US$ seperately from Linden Lab's own exchange service, and has recently set up a similar service buying and selling IMVU credits.
A surprise event happened over the weekend of the 1st April 2006.and this is not an April Fool joke. It appears that Anshe Chung is in some type of dispute with Linden Labs the creator of Second Life. It is not yet clear what the nature of this dispute is; this author has heard only one side of the argument and would not care to speculate on the precise reasons. However what is clear today is that Anshe Chung’s access to Second Life has been suspended by Linden, as both parties have confirmed this fact.
One would hope for a clear statement from Linden Labs as Anshe Chung controls a large number of Sims with many aviators both dependent on her for an income as well as "owning" land/property via her business.
One view of this issue is that it does underscore the need to review First Life law within virtual communities, especially those that have a real life economic theme with a currency that appears to be convertible. It is not too hard to visualise ahead the fact that economic virtual communities could be big business and one would not wish to see innocent bystanders loose money and/or creative art due to poor disclosure and arbitrary action, who ever is deemed to be at fault
