Resignation from Misplaced Pages
When Misplaced Pages first started, it was a very nice project. You could contribute to existing articles or start new ones, and it was fun to watch other users improve on what you had written -- expanding it, making it clearer, adding more information, etc. It really worked well for a number of years.
But those days are over. I've found lately that if you try to contribute anything at all, somebody immediately deletes your contribution, citing some obscure violation of the minutiae of thousands of Misplaced Pages rules and policies. I've sometimes spent hours and hours arguing with someone over making even the tiniest change to an article; then after having soundly won the argument, had my contribution deleted anyway. Start a new article on some topic, and it gets almost immediately deleted. Try correcting or adding to an existing article, and your edits are immediately reverted. Try to look up an article you wrote a few years ago, and it's gone. There's just no point in spending time on the Misplaced Pages project anymore, when anything you do is immediately deleted. After many years of contributing to Misplaced Pages, I've finally had enough of fighting with these self-appointed deletionist Misplaced Pages topic police. I won't be contributing to it anymore, and will be joining the increasing number of people who are abandoning the Misplaced Pages project. SimpsonDG (talk) 02:53, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Update, June 2012
I've recently tried making a two very short "test edits" on Misplaced Pages, just to see if conditions have improved here in the last year. They haven't. In fact they've gotten worse -- much worse. My two very minor edits were deleted almost immediately after I posted them. In the early days of Misplaced Pages, I originated a number of new articles, and most of those articles are still around today. But I'm completely convinced that I could never do that today. If I were to try to start a new article today, there would be a race among "administrators" to see who could delete it first, like sharks going after raw meat, and they'd cite some arcane jargon like WP:XYZ or WP:ZZR as their justification. Sadly, it looks like Misplaced Pages has reached the stage where it's now completely overrun by of a band of antisocial Misplaced Pages nerds, whose lives revolve around rigorously and ruthlessly enforcing their personal interpretations of thousands of Misplaced Pages rules and policies. I guess it makes them feel important. But unlike them, my life isn't centered on Misplaced Pages, and I don't have the time or patience to deal with these busybodies anymore.
My plans for the future are:
- I don't plan to contribute anything to Misplaced Pages anymore -- not even minor edits or corrections. I won't be donating money to it anymore either.
- I may join a Misplaced Pages alternative such as Scholarpedia instead.
- From now on, any ideas I have for new wiki-like articles will be posted on my personal Web site at http://www.davidgsimpson.com/nanopedia, instead of here on Misplaced Pages. There they'll be protected from the hoards of idiotic Misplaced Pages nerds. I've also posted there some articles I wrote for Misplaced Pages that have since been deleted.
