Somalia Governorate was one of the six governorates of Italian East Africa.
History
The Somalia Governorate lasted from 1936 until 1941. The administrative capital was Mogadiscio, that in 1936 had 50,000 inhabitants of which 20,000 were Italians. The car tag for all Somalia was SOM.
The Italians in 1937 started the construction of a paved highway from Mogadiscio to Addis Abeba, that was completed in 1940. Other roads were started in 1939, from Mogadiscio to the northern Somalia coast and to the Kenya border.
There was even a project to connect Mogadiscio with the railway Addis Abeba-Gibuti and another to start the construction of an airport in the outskirts of Mogadiscio, but the beginning of WWII stopped all this.
In summer 1940 British Somaliland was included in the Somalia Governorate, but only for a few months until the reconquest by the British troops that happened in March 1941.
