Dodd was born in Willimantic. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in English Literature from Providence College in 1966, Dodd served as a Peace Corps volunteer in a small rural town in the Dominican Republic until 1968. The following year, he was admitted to Connecticut bar, and began practicing law in New London.
In 1974, Dodd was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Connecticut's second congressional district. He was reelected twice, serving from January 3, 1975 to January 3, 1981. In November 1980, Dodd was elected to the U.S. Senate, and was subsequently reelected in 1986, 1992, and 1998. His seat is again up for reelection in the 2004 Senate election. Most political forecasters believe he will be easily reelected.
