Mudkip is one of the three Hoenn starter pokémon (the other two are Treecko and Torchic).
Name Origin
Mudkip's name might be derived from the words mud and skip, but there may be a more accurate name origin.
Pokédex definition
According to the pokédex, this pokémon uses its fin "to sense...what is taking place around it" and when it's underwater, it "breathes using the gills on its cheeks." Additionally, if it senses it's in danger, it "will unleash its amazing power - it can crush rocks bigger than itself."
In-game details
Picking this pokémon as a starter is categorized as choosing a "Medium" difficulty level for the game because the first gym leader uses pokémon whose type is weak against Mudkip's and the later-in-the-game Granite Cave has some pokémon who are also weak agaisnt Mudkips powerfull water blasts. However, it is important to note that the third gym leader uses pokémon that could devastate even the best-trained Mudkip.
In the anime
In the pokémon anime, Brock (who travels with Ash Ketchum) has a Mudkip.
