"Partition" is a song recorded by American recording artist Beyoncé Knowles, for her fifth studio album Beyoncé (2013). It consist of two parts, titled "Yoncé" and "Partition", for which two separate music videos were filmed. The song charted at number 46 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Composition
The original drumbeat for "Yoncé" was created by Justin Timberlake on a bucket, and was later developed when The-Dream penned the lyric, "Yoncé all on his mouth like liquor".
"Partition" was produced by Timbaland and gained attention for its explicit lyrics with frequent references made to the opening lines: "Driver roll up the partition please/I don't need you seeing 'Yoncé on her knees" and "He Monica Lewinsky'd all on my gown".
Critical reception
Eliana Dockterman of Time magazine hailed the lyrical content of "Partition" as just one of the examples on the album of the "embodiment of modern feminism for a generation that has been reluctant to claim the word", praising how Knowles "express her desire to please while still projecting a fierce, independent persona." Matthew Perpetua of BuzzFeed praised the French spoken word section of the track, comparing it to the Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie sample in "***Flawless", stating how "it’s good that these ideas aren’t directly expressed by Beyoncé herself – in context, these bits are like reblogged quotes that frame her artistic intentions – because she knows she doesn’t need to be so didactic when she’s actually singing about sex, and to do so would defeat her point about owning her pleasures."
Music videos
Music videos for "Yoncé" and "Partition" were released on December 13, 2013 on Beyoncé album.
"Yoncé"
The video for "Yoncé" was directed by Ricky Saiz, and features models Jourdan Dunn, Chanel Iman and Joan Smalls. Filming took place on the streets of Brooklyn, New York and featured Knowles and the models dressed in leather, fishnets, and straps, posing against a brick wall, with cameras showing flashes of skin, close-ups of lips, and erotic tongue flicks. Saiz used the video for George Michael's "Freedom" as a reference point, after Knowles' initial concept of a "contemporary, street version" of the video. "Freedom" similarly featured the lip-sync performance of contemporary supermodels, including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford. Allison Davis of The Cut called the "Yoncé" video, "contemporary, gritty and voyeuristic" with "nineties-era eroticism and subtle sexuality", referring to the visual as "two minutes and four seconds of fashion and sex", whilst Zayda Rivera of New York Daily News praised the "flawless" delivery of "sexual innuendos", "seductive moves" and the "flaunting of a whole lot of curves" in the clip.
"Partition"
— Knowles describing the concept of the "Partition" video."I was 195 pounds when I gave birth… I worked crazily to get my body back. I wanted to show my body. I wanted to show that you can have a child and you can work hard and you can get your body back. I know that there's so many women that feel the same thing after they give birth. You can have your child and you can still have fun and still be sexy and still have dreams and still live for yourself. I'm not embarrassed about it, and I don't feel like I have to protect that side of me because I do believe that sexuality is a power we all have."
The video for "Partition" was directed by Jake Nava and was shot at the Parisian cabaret club, Crazy Horse. It features Knowles' husband Jay-Z, and the Crazy Horse dancers. In a video commentary to the album, Knowles said: "The day that I got engaged was my husband's birthday and I took him to Crazy Horse. And I remember thinking, 'Damn, these girls are fly.' I just thought it was the ultimate sexy show I've ever seen. And I was like, 'I wish I was up there, I wish I could perform that for my man...' So that's what I did for the video." Initial reaction to the video was mixed, with Knowles receiving criticism for the overt sexuality of the visual, which features her "cage danc for her husband" and "writhing around on the floor in her underwear", which Vivienne Pattison of Mediawatch-UK believed showed that she had "sold out" and undermined her position as role model and previous "powerful messages that empowered women and girls". Contrasting reviews hailed the explicit nature of the video, with Alice Newbold of The Telegraph stating how it showed Knowles as "one sassy lady on a mission to show she's back in the game". Knowles later clarified the reasoning behind the visual, namely her 65lb weight loss after the birth of her daughter Blue Ivy, wanting to promote the idea of still having dreams and being sexy after giving birth.
