MotiveKilling of 3 Israeli teenagers

Mohammed Abu Khdeir was a Palestinian. The teenager was kidnapped and murdered after the 2014 kidnapping and murder of Israeli teenagers.

Early on the morning of July 2, 2014, Khdeir was snatched off an East Jerusalem street and forced into a car. His family immediately reported the Israeli Police of the abduction. Police quickly located his charred body in a forest across the city.

The Israeli police investigated several possible motives for his killing. The preliminary evidence indicates that it was a revenge attack for the kidnap-murders of the Israeli teens. However, Police have yet to ruled out the possibility that Khdeir's death was an Arab honour killing, or other criminal act, but the first theory is the predominant one.

Background

The Shu'fat neighborhood is located in East Jerusalem, and it was home to Mohammed Abu Khdeir. The neighborhood is calmer than some other areas and its residents do not often get into confrontations with the Israeli police. Muhammad Abu-Khdeir was 16 and studied electricity at the "Amal" high school. His father is an electrician and his family is a big clan that is well known Shu'afat. In his last days, he helped a family member decorate the main street in Shu'fat with lamps on the occasion of Ramadan.

On June 12, 2014, three Israeli teenagers, Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar, and Naftoli Frankel were hitchhiking home from school, and were kidnapped by Arabs who were posing as Israelis. They were excuted almost immediately, but this was not generally known for several weeks, until the discovery of their bodies on June 30. In the interim, their fate became an Israeli national focus, from the grassroots to the highest level of government. They were buried late in the afternoon of July 1, and the country was at an emotional limit.

Khdeir, 16, was killed a day after the burial of the three Israeli teenagers.

Disappearance and Murder

On July 2, the day of the abduction, at 3:45 AM, Muhammad was in front of a local mosque, for a pre-fast meal and dawn prayers, along with several friends. When the friends went inside without him, he was approached by his abductors. They took him to their vehicle and drove off quickly toward the French Hill Junction and from there to the Jerusalem Forest. According to Google, the travel time from the the local mosque to the place where his body was is 12 minutes.

There were witnesses and security footage of the abduction. The family notified the Israeli police immediately about the incident. The police tracked Khdeir's cell phone, and an hour and a half after the kidnapping they found his scorched body in the Jerusalem Forest. The security footage appears to show Israelis carrying out the attack, and police assume that it was in revenge for the deaths of the Israeli teens.

Similar attack

Two days prior to the incident the Israeli police was reported of a kidnapped attempt of a 7 years old Moussa Zalum also from Shuafat. Zalum managed to escape with an evident rough bruising on his neck, whilst his mother is hitting the attacker in order to rescue her son. There was no police report filed, and it is not clear that the attack was done by Jews. The same vehicle may have been used in both cases.

Reactions

Palestinian

Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine, accused Israeli settlers of carrying out the attack and called for the "strongest punishment against the murderers if Israel truly wants peace." Hamas released a statement saying that "Our people will not let this crime pass... You will pay the price for these crimes."

Israeli

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged a swift inquiry into the “reprehensible murder” and called on people to respect the rule of law. Nir Barkat, Mayor of Jerusalem, said the killing was “a horrible and barbaric act which I strongly condemn. This is not our way, and I am fully confident that our security forces will bring the perpetrators to justice. I call on everyone to exercise restraint."

United Nations

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, said the attack was a "despicable act" and demanded the perpetrators be brought to justice.

Riots

Soon after the word broke out about Khdeir's death, riots broke out in Shu'fat.
