Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, commonly referred to as Moms Demand Action, is a campaign of Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund. The group was founded by Shannon Watts (aka Shannon Troughton), a former communications executive, in Indianapolis, on December 15, 2012, the day after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The group started as a Facebook page entitled "One Million Moms for Gun Control." By the end of 2013, it had grown into an advocacy group with 130,000 members and chapters in all 50 states. Moms Demand Action has lobbied members of Congress to strengthen and expand background checks for individuals purchasing guns. An ad campaign launched by the group compared assault weapons to less harmful things which have been banned in certain areas of the United States, including Kinder Surprise chocolates, certain books, and dodgeball.
Watts modeled Moms Demand Action after Mothers Against Drunk Driving. In December 2013, Moms Demand Action announced that it had joined forces with Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan coalition of over 1,000 mayors that advocates for more gun control.
In her former career as a communications executive, Watts' experience ranged from being public affairs officer for Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan, the Missouri House of Representatives, the Missouri Department of Economic Development, Vice President of Corporate and Public Affairs at FleishmanHillard, Director of Global and Public Affairs at Monsanto Corporation, Director of Global Communications for GE Healthcare, and then Vice President of Corporate Communications at WellPoint, the nation’s largest health insurance corporation.
