Uppsala (population 189,569) is a city located about 70 km north of Stockholm in Sweden. It is the site of the oldest university in Sweden, founded in 1477. Uppsala also has a gothic cathedral, one of the largest in northern Europe, with towers reaching 119 metres. The cathedral can be seen from miles away in the very flat field landscape. Carolus Linneaus lived in the city for many years, and both his house and garden is to be seen in Uppsala. There is also a castle in Uppsala, built by the kings of the sixteenth century. The city was sererly damaged by a fire in 1702. Uppsala also, like many other Swedish cities, suffered a lot of by the many demolitions between about 1965 and 1975. Eventough the lack of understanding of the value of the older buildings at that time, many historic buildings remain, especially in the western part of the city. Uppsala is famous for its position in the developement of biotechnology.
