Hope is precious and great joy is found in living

Thank you for the sapphire—cornflower blue is a color of some significance to me. In the maelstrom that Misplaced Pages can sometimes be, remember these words from Ode to Joy:

   Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
   Eines Freundes Freund zu sein,
   Wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
   Mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
   Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
   Weinend sich aus diesem Bund!

Walk lightly and remain yourself, above the fray. StaniStani  09:20, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for great work on the structure and sources of Bach's Mass in B minor!

I don't know the best way or place to write to you to thank you. (There is a heart icon that links to a way to send appreciation, but I don't understand it.) So, this is where I am thanking you for all the work on the sources of the movements of the mass, etc. After making a few edits today, I saw the history and see all you have done to create (I think) and improve this page. Hi Gerda, I am quite sure a correct link was made in this article and I explained here. You might want to double check yourself. Thanks. Mdd (talk) 15:55, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Yes, sorry, I thought it had been linked before, my mistake. - I was confused by two links to the same person, and it's very good to have him linked in the bibliography also. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:58, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

The "best of" Bruckner's motets

Dear Gerda,

On his webpage Kleine Kirchenmusikwerke CD set John Berky is promoting Hans Roelofs' "best of" Bruckner's motets.

Hans provided me with this 3 CD set two months ago. It contains recordings of all items of Band 21 of the Gesamtausgabe, except the sketches Nos. 42 (Kyrie g-Moll (Fragment) - WAB 140) and 43 (Kyrie Es-Dur (Fragment) - WAB 139), for which no recording is available. I enjoy it very much.

Best regards, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 19:55, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

If you (or any other one) are interested to get a copy of this valuable CD set, do not hesitate to contact John Berky. --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 14:17, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Spanish Hill

Thank you for your review of my DYK nomination! I appreciate your time and consideration. If you'd like to read more about Spanish Hill, I found a very interesting website online from a historian local to the area (Deb Twigg; she was also mentioned in the article). Spanish Hill. I wanted to include a little bit of fun information regarding "7 foot tall horned Indian skeletons" found in the area, but I couldn't justify its inclusion, since they weren't found on the hill specifically, but in the general vicinity. Anyway, thanks again for reviewing my hook, and for all your other great work at DYK and elsewhere.-RHM22 (talk) 19:01, 6 January 2015 (UTC) P.s., I see your point about the etymology being in the lede section, but I feel like it might be important information for visitors (all three of them) who might be looking for that specific information, although I did shorten that sentence to reduce its prominence.-RHM22 (talk) 19:04, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for coming over. Name in lead: just a question about weight, perhaps add more other facts there also. I like that the hook doesn't mention a place^ ;) - Best reading I can offer right now is BWV 22 (FAC open), --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:09, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
That looks like an interesting article! I'll take a good look at it and at the FAC when I get a chance later tonight.-RHM22 (talk) 21:06, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

A well-deserved barnstar

The Barnstar of Integrity
Gerda, for your ceaseless efforts across the project to recognize and encourage civility, goodwill, and all manner of useful contributions -- and just generally to foster a collegial and warm atmosphere -- I hope you will accept this barnstar. I had considered giving you the Random Acts of Kindness star or the PumpkinSky Prize, but (unsurprisingly) I find they've already been awarded, so I've settled on this option, fresh and just as appropriate as it is. All my best. Snow talk 03:34, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

The "notorious infoboxes criminal" accepts with delight! I was planning to write on Geh aus, mein Herz, und suche Freud today (my mom's favourite song on her birthday) which is about seeking joy, - now joy just comes ;) - Thank you, made my day! (I still plan to expand the article, it's not too obvious anyway that it's about actively seeking joy when you don't see any.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:45, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

Well, geteilte Freude ist doppelte Freude, as the old chestnut goes -- and it's always nice in particular to share it with someone who so exemplifies that perspective. But regardless of the source, I hope the day brings you more joy still.  :) Snow talk 10:47, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Te Deum (Jenkins). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Roth and Fowles, epitaphs and graves

Hi Gerda. Do you remember what I said here? I took a long time to upload that image for the Ernst Roth article. Now I've finally managed to do the same for the Leonard N. Fowles article. It being a musical subject and both having epitaphs related to that, I thought you might appreciate a note about this. On another note, I mentioned decay of graves in that comment back in January 2014, and you can see for yourself the difference in the condition of the graves if you look at the articles: William Birdwood, 1st Baron Birdwood, Ernst Roth, Francis Francis (writer), Herbert Edgar Weston, Frederick James Camm, Leonard N. Fowles, Laurence Oliphant (author), Joseph Jackson Howard, Edward Stanley Gibbons. Carcharoth (talk) 10:06, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Hilfe bitte

Hi Gerda! Since you're German, I was wondering if I could call on you for a bit of help? I just created the article for Günter Lamprecht, a great actor from your country. I mostly used a translated version of the German article, but obviously the translation can be gobbledegook at times. Do you think you could take a look, see if I understood correctly, and maybe add anything I missed? The stuff about him being involved in a shooting was particularly confusing. Cheers (and thanks again for the support with Hoffman, which has just passed - hooray!) --Loeba (talk) 14:37, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

How on earth was Günter Lamprecht missing!! A very familiar face of German cinema!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:45, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

I'm currently making my way through Berlin Alexanderplatz and absolutely love him in it, so it only felt right to create his article. He doesn't have many other notable roles, it seems, but it's still strange no-one had done it before. --Loeba (talk) 15:10, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
I know him from the masterpiece Das Boot, but I could have sworn I've seen him in a number of other films. His face is almost as familiar as Prochnow's!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:28, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you!

DYK nomination Symphonic Prelude (Bruckner)

Dear Gerda,

I have amended the concerned paragraph as follows:

"... not everyone became convinced that the piece was originated by Bruckner and so the "controversial" piece remained rarely performed. The original orchestration was performed first ...".

OK so? --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 09:20, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Konservatorium Wien

Hello. I recognized your revert to this article after I moved it to another name. Well, It is a bit strange if the name of all the other main articles of the Austrian conservatories are written in English except this article of Konservatorium Wien. The Vienna Conservatory is already confused with the Konservatorium Wien here in Austria in our real life. So where is the problem to leave the article moved to the English name? Opo Chano (talk) 12:35, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

I asked at Classical music, please go there also. The problem is confusion which happens in translation, when conservatory and academy are used for three different organizations. We should not invent English names, but use names from reliable sources. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:45, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
Ok, understood. Opo Chano (talk) 12:50, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/February 7, 2015

I'd consider it a favor if we could go with "Twelve". The AmEng dictionaries I use all capitalize it (AHD, M-W, Random House), and the BrEng dictionaries (oxforddictionaries.com, SOED), and I think it's important to follow the higher-quality sources. Having said that: I'm not looking to establish a precedent that I get to decide usage because of my hat. I've made a proposal to the other two TFA coords that we look to pull in more volunteers and get more feedback on decisions. But until I can get that going, I think I'll make Bencherlite less nervous if we follow modern usage, and I also think that following the dictionaries is the decision that a group is most likely to settle on, when we start making these decisions as a group. - Dank (push to talk) 01:45, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

I just made one more tweak, adding inline attribution to the quote per WP:INTEXT. - Dank (push to talk) 03:35, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
From the score
It would be my second article where the spelling contradicts the majority of sources used for the article. I am on voluntary 1RR. At least in this case it doesn't contradict Bach ;) Favour enough? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:25, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
As for the attribution, it reads a bit as if the complete sentence is "his" (opinion), but it's only the description including "operatic", - no doubt a fact that some elements set the standard. I wonder how to express that there are yearly cycles of Leipzig church cantatas to come, for those who don't know. At least a link? Will work on Thomaskantor, hopefully today, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:08, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks kindly. Added your link, twelve -> Twelve. - Dank (push to talk) 13:44, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Just saw your edit to the "frame" sentence. The more we fiddle with this, the more I become convinced that we'll be better off without that sentence ... it just raises way more questions in readers' minds than it answers, which is one of the main things to avoid in a TFA paragraph. May I delete the sentence? - Dank (push to talk) 15:07, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
It's about a key point of the whole cantata: that the early work has elements of the many (cantatas) and great (Passions) works to come. I expect that even readers who don't know what a cantata is, may have heard that Bach wrote the St Matthew Passion. I am a DYK person, - raising questions that make readers click. Rephrase without the quote? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:54, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
We can't put quoted material on the Main Page without quote marks, Gerda. Can you rephrase in your own words? - Dank (push to talk) 18:57, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
Thats what I did, I can't change the terms chorale, recitative and aria, but switched their order and made them plural instead of singular, could say "bible quotation" instead of "bible text", if that helps, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:54, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

One happy editor

Dear Gerda, - I want to thank you, so much, for naming me an "awesome Wikipedian" for my work on the Mark Satin biography, and for giving me my day! As you may know, the article was "Today's featured article" on the Main Page that day, and I (with others' help) have had to spend all my Misplaced Pages time since then digging out from under various malicious edits and inappropriate edits. Receiving the award when I did made these last 10 days much more bearable for me.

I would love to put news of the award on my talk page! I've done so in the text, but I would prefer doing so with a Userbox, particularly if it has that gorgeous blue sapphire on it. Is there one? I'll watch this space for your reply. - Babel41 (talk) 04:21, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

There is a box, further down on the awards list, created by the earlier givers. There is no one with the sapphire, - the square box would not match the designer's ideas. Create something?
This user has been identified as an Awesome Wikipedian.
I dropped the "their own day" because that was true only the first year, and I don't like "his or her" anyway ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:19, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
Yes, and "their own day" may be too, um, precious to boot. But I love the box above and as you'll see, I simply linked the "Awesome Wikipedian" phrase in it to the PumpkinSky Prize page, which appears to go from 2012 right up to the present. I hope that's not stepping on any toes. - Babel41 (talk) 06:53, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, good idea. I made it an inline link. We'll see about the toes ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:01, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, Ched. - Is this what you requested? (And what I hesitate to put on your user page, afraid of another round of arb enforcement) - I found no parameter for gender=male in {{infobox person}}.
"This little light of mine" was regularly sung at a Sunday Gospel Brunch, by a gospel group lead by an enormous woman (enormous both in body and spirit), and the restaurant guests, children only in the first verse, - thanks for bringing back lovely memories!
Je suis - I follow the one who quoted "The only real nation is humanity", pictured on top and (because I sometimes change) here, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:07, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
