(+44) (pronounced "plus forty four") is a synth-based rock band from former blink-182 members Mark Hoppus (bass and vocals) and Travis Barker (drums and keyboards). The name (+44) is a reference to the international dialing code for the United Kingdom, where Hoppus and Barker first discussed the new project. By September 2005 the band had recorded 16 songs and is expected to finish recording in the following months. At first the band was supposed to release their debut album in the autumn of 2005, but due to Travis' busy schedule with the Transplants (who broke up at the end of the Warped Tour), and Mark working with his podcast and producing other albums, the CD is set to release on October 24, 2006.
In the April edition of the Alternative Press magazine Mark revealed that the group will release their debut album on Interscope Records.
When Mark was asked about the development on (+44)'s sound in an interview on November 14, 2005 he stated "Well the sound of (+44) is still developing right now. Right now to me it sounds like punk rock meets '80s synth rock, meets...all different kind of influences are in there. I mean, there are songs where it's like a hip hop beat with electric guitar over it or like a really trance-y beat with keyboards on top of that, and some are just straight forward rock songs. We have like three or four songs now that are pretty much done and a lot more songs that are just ideas and even more to write. So we're really just getting started on the recording process and we'll see what ends up like at the end. Right now it's really diverse, really all over the place and schizophrenic, which is a good thing."
When Mark was asked if there were keyboards in (+44) in March 2006 when he and Motion City Soundtrack were being hosted by Fuse, he answered "Yeah, there's a lot of keyboard stuff in (+44). There's a lot of electronic elements, and everything from keyboards, to samples, to Travis recording a lot of the drums on v-drums, electronic drums. But it's still very guitar based and very rock at the same time."
(+44) released their first song, entitled "No It Isn't," on their website on December 13th - the same day as the scheduled release of the first Angels and Airwaves material, a band recently formed by Tom Delonge and his (Delonge's) actual birthday. This song was taken down after a countdown on the website, though it can still be found "hidden" on their website. It was believed that the countdown would end in a new song being released by the band. However, much to the disappointment of many avid fans, no second song has been released to date.
As of May 16th, 2006, Mark is still recording songs for (+44). During his 15th podcast, he talked about their newest song, "Lillian", which, according to Mark, will "kick a million asses." Mark also mentioned the song "Weatherman" on his blog (but stated the title will most likely change) and the song code named "LD", a "future #1" (as in #1 on the billboard charts) on podcast #17. Other confirmed tracks include "Little Death" and "155". The "LD", mentioned in Podcast #17, most likely refers to the song "Little Death".
It was recently confirmed by Travis Barker that "No It Isn't" will be the first single by the band, as news was first released on a fansite with pictures of the single cover and the disc. It will be released around September (though 500 copies of a limited edition print were made available to anyone who ordered "merch" from the site).
An article posted June 7th, 2006 on MTV.com mentioned that "Internet whisperings" have claimed Carol Heller is rumored to be out of the band and replaced by guitarist Craig Fairbaugh.
On July 1st, 2006, the very first photo of (+44) was released on their official site, which featured Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker, Craig Fairbaugh and Shane Gallagher. Carol Heller was nowhere seen in the picture, most likely ratifying that she is no longer in the band.
Only July 14th, 2006, the first offical show for (+44) was confirmed as Bamboozle East by MTV.com. This concert will take place in Pomona on October 14-15 of this year.
