Biography

Woods was raised in Steamboat Springs and graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in 1979.

Woods then attended Stephens Henager Business College receiving an Associate’s Degree as a legal secretary. She then attended the Denver Academy of Court Reporting, where she graduated in 1982 as a Registered Professional Reporter.

Woods married Bill Woods, in March 1983. They have two sons, two daughters-in-law and three grandchildren.

Woods worked as a freelance court reporter from 1982 to 1996, starting with Avery Reporting, covering bankruptcy court and deposition proceedings. She and her husband formed their own court reporting firm in 1990, called Woods Reporting. In 1992, they purchased Avery Reporting and merged it with their firm, forming Avery Woods Reporting. They still own and operate Avery Woods Reporting today.

In 1996, Woods began an 18-year period with Bible Study Fellowship International. Here she served as a Discussion Group Leader for 2 years, then as the Substitute Teaching Leader for 3 years. In January 2004, she became a Teaching Leader. For 10 years she trained a group of 30-50 leaders each week and taught the leaders' class every Thursday from September through May.

Political Life

Colorado's Senate Recalls

Woods became involved with the 2013 Colorado senate recall efforts. She volunteered with the first Evie Hudak Recall which was suspended in the spring of 2013. This focused additional resources to the Pueblo and Colorado Springs Recalls. Woods frequently drove to Pueblo to volunteer with their Recall team.

Following the victory in Pueblo, Woods and two others formed the management team to restart the second Evie Hudak Recall in October 2013. Woods was a member of the Issue Committee and served as the Retail Liaison, coordinating with the retail locations which carried Recall petitions. She also worked with the local VFW and American Legions to obtain recall signatures.

With the assistance of hundreds of volunteers, the Recall efforts culminated in Senator Hudak resigning in December 2013.

2014 Senate Campaign

Early in 2014, Woods decided to run for the SD 19 Senate position. She submitted her Affidavit with the Secretary of State on January 6, 2014. A republican competitor entered the race on January 14, 2014. Woods won the Republican Primary in June 2014. She continued her senate campaign and beat the appointed incumbent democratic Senator in the November 2014 General Election.

2015 Senator Woods

Senator Woods was sworn in on January 7, 2015 and serves on three Senate Committees of Reference: Business, Labor & Technology; Education and Appropriations. She was also appointed to the legislative Board of Ethics and the Joint Health Benefit Exchange Implementation Review Committee.
