In July 2013, the liberal publication Mother Jones stated Bannon as a key member of Groundswell, "a secretive coalition of right wing activists and journalists attempting to make political change behind the scenes through lobbying of high-level contacts."

On August 9, 2015, news broke that, according to four anonymous sources within Breitbart, Bannon had accepted money from the Donald Trump presidential campaign in exchange for favorable coverage from the news site.

Bannon is on the board of the Government Accountability Institute.
