Bill Morneau is a Canadian businessman, community volunteer and is the Executive Chair of Canada’s largest human resources firm, Morneau Shepell. He has been the Chair of the Board at St. Michaels Hospital, Covenant House, and the C.D. Howe Institute. An active supporter of the UNHCR, Morneau has also worked extensively with Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya to develop education resources.

In 2014, Morneau announced he would be running for the Liberal Party of Canada, and he is currently the federal Liberal candidate in the redistributed riding of Toronto Centre for the upcoming October 19, 2015 General Election.

Personal Life

Morneau was born in 1962 in Toronto, Ontario where he attended Senator O’Connor College School. From 1981 to 1986, Morneau attended the University of Western Ontario and completed an Honours BA. During that time he also spent one year at University of Grenoble (France). He later went on to study at the London School of Economics (United Kingdom) and INSEAD (France) where he earned an M.Sc. (Econ.) and an MBA respectively.

Morneau is married to Nancy McCain since 1995, and together they are raising four children.

Business Career

As Executive Chair of Morneau Shepell, the largest Canadian human resources services organization with offices across North America, Morneau has led the firm through a period of rapid growth from approximately 200 employees in 1992 to almost 4000 in 2015. Under his leadership the firm has gone through several significant changes, including the acquisition of Sobeco from Ernst & Young in 1997, going public on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2005, and the acquisition of Shepell-FGI in 2008.

Morneau Shepell provides over 20,000 organizations representing millions of Canadians with pension, employee benefit and Employee Assistance Programs.

Since joining the Company in 1987, Morneau’s executive positions have included appointments to President in 1992, President and Chief Executive Officer in 1998, and Chair and Chief Executive Officer in 2008.

Recognized for his public policy expertise, Morneau was appointed as Pension Investment Advisor to the Ontario Minister of Finance in 2012, providing counsel aimed at facilitating the pooling of public-sector pension fund assets . In 2014, he was appointed by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne to an expert panel led by former Prime Minister Paul Martin to recommend a made-in-Ontario pension supplement to the Canada Pension Plan.

Community Involvement

A long-time supporter of the arts, education, and health care, Morneau has applied his business expertise in leadership roles for several important community institutions in Toronto and abroad.

Morneau served as the Chair of the Board at St. Michael's Hospital from 2009 to 2013, and as a board member from 2003 to 2013. He continues to offer his expertise on the board of St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation (2013 - present).

Previously, Morneau served as the Chair of Covenant House (1997 – 2000), Chair of C.D. Howe Institute (2010 – 2014), and as a board member at AGF Management(2001 - 2014). He has volunteered as a board member for the Art Gallery of Ontario Foundation (2004 – 2011), the Canadian Opera Company (2001 – 2010), Greenwood College (2012 – 2015), and the Toronto Zoo Foundation (2000 – 2004).

Today, Morneau continues to voluntarily devote his time and expertise as a board member for the Loran Scholars Foundation (2008 - present), The Learning Partnership (2012 - present), and The Canadian INSEAD Foundation (2009 - present).

Philanthropy

In 2010, Morneau led the initiative to build the Morneau Shepell Technology Centre in Camp Kakuma, providing refugees with access to computer technologies and related skills. Morneau led the development and construction of the Morneau Shepell Secondary School for Girls, a boarding school in Camp Kakuma that opened in 2013. The school currently provides 250 refugee girls, primarily of South Sudanese and Somali descent, with high school education in a safe environment.

Together with his wife, Morneau has been a significant financial supporter of the arts, health care, and educational programs in Toronto including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Power Plant, St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation, and The Hospital for Sick Children.

Politics

In June 2014, Morneau was nominated as the Liberal Party of Canada candidate for the newly configured riding of Toronto Centre. In December 2014, he was also appointed to serve on Justin Trudeau’s Economic Council of Advisors to provide the Liberal leader with advice on economic issues.

Other Work

Morneau has co-authored a book entitled, The Real Retirement: Why You Could Be Better Off Than You Think and How to Make That Happen, a well-received analysis of the context and the factors involved in helping Canadians plan for a successful retirement.

He is also an occasional contributor to major print publications including the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, and the Huffington Post.
