Murabitat (defenders of the faith or steadfast) (“Murabitin” (males) and “Murabitat” (females)) is a movement of Muslim women funded by the northern branch of Israel’s Islamic Movement who hold classes at at Al Aqsa Mosque. The level of classes varies from learning how to read and write, to university level, and Islamic tajweed or the musical chanting of Quranic verses. Members of Murabitat movement also keep an eye on Jewish extremists attempting to pray at the compound and disrupt religious Jewish visitors with shouts of Allahu Akbar and physical assaults.
In August 2015, the activists were banned from Temple Mountain by Israeli Minister of Public Security, Gilad Erdan, during visiting hours. Earlier, the Arab League condemned the plan to ban the group.
