My Misplaced Pages ideas

I have an idea for the webmasters on wikipedia, if they are interested. I know there are numerous websites out there, including Myspace and Nohomers, that display when a person is signed in and is active. I have also noticed that there are a number of people on wikipedia that have a makeshift system of this, where they must edit their page to tell others that they are on the site. I was wondering if there was a way for the webmasters at wikipedia to get the necessay software/script/code in order for each user page to display whether the user is online or not. Please let me know what you think of my idea and if it can be implemented because I have wanted one on my page, but do not want to deal with the hassle of editing every time I get on or off. Thank you for your time.

My father also introduced a new idea for me to inquire about. We have a project related to the albums that have articles on wikipedia, Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Albums. Is there a way that Misplaced Pages could use the CDDB to generate the infoboxes that are requested? Itunes uses it and many other music oriented programs use it, so I was wondering if Misplaced Pages could use it to help strengthen the album articles and help with WikiProject Albums. Leave comments here or relay this to someone who would be able to work this out. Thanks again for reading my two cents.

It would be a good idea to propose this at the Village Pump, which is used to discuss the technical issues, policies, and operations of Misplaced Pages, and propose new ideas. Harryboyles 10:29, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Both were shot down at the pump, but maybe as Misplaced Pages progresses they can be reevaluated. I am keeping them up for historical and possible revival records. --WillMak050389 18:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Flatfoot56wallpaper.PNG

Thanks for uploading Image:Flatfoot56wallpaper.PNG. Misplaced Pages gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Misplaced Pages, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Misplaced Pages:Media copyright questions. 02:04, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

My RfA

Hi, I would like to express my gratitude for your participation at my recent RfA. The final vote was 68/21/3 and resulted in me becoming an admin!

For those of you who supported my RfA, I highly appreciate your kind words and your trust in me. For those who opposed - many of you expressed valid concerns regarding my activity here; I will make an effort in addressing them as time goes on while at the same time using my admin tools appropriately. So, salamat, gracias, merci, ありがとう, спасибо, धन्यवाद, 多謝, agyamanak unay, شكرًا, cảm ơn, 감사합니다, mahalo, ขอบคุณครับ, go raibh maith agat, dziękuję, ευχαριστώ, Danke, תודה, mulţumesc, გმადლობთ, etc.! If you need any help, feel free to contact me.

What is a tag and why is it a problem? The 33kb size of the png version concerns me. - Diceman 19:18, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

The tag states "please upload a PNG or SVG version of this image, derived from a non-JPEG source". There was no point in putting that specific tag on this image and there is no increase in quality whatsoever with your png conversion. It is in fact the png image that is obsolete. The person who put that tag on the image has wasted everyone's time. - Diceman 14:02, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

thank you

Just to say thanks for posting such a very helpful welcome on my talk page. Most useful. Cheers :) Allegro Agitato 22:14, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

My RfA thanks

Hello WillMak050389, and thank you for your support and kind comments at my Request for Adminship, which succeeded with an overwhelming final count of (105/2/0). I was very pleased with the outpouring of kind words from the community that has now entrusted me with these tools, from the classroom, the lesson in human psychology and the international resource known as Misplaced Pages. The 💕. Please feel free to leave me plenty of requests, monitor my actions (through the admin desk on my userpage) and, if you find yourself in the mood, listen to some of what I do in real life. In any case, keep up the great work and have a fabulous day. Grandmasterka 07:24, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Image:Doop logo.jpg and Image:Doop logo.png

Thank you for working to replace Image:Doop logo.jpg with a PNG version. Unfortunately, simply converting the JPEG version to a PNG, as you did to create Image:Doop logo.png, doesn't help much.

When an image is saved in the JPEG format, it suffers from compression artifacts, due to JPEG's lossy compression algorithm. These compression artifacts manifest themselves as "fuzz" in the image. This fuzz is usually invisible in photographs, so JPEG is preferred over PNG for photos, as it can more efficiently compress photographic images. However, for logos, maps, graphs, flags, line art, and other images that have sharp edges and large areas of a few well-defined solid colors, PNG compression is more efficient than JPEG compression. Additionally, compression artifacts are highly visible in these images. So the PNG format, which uses a lossless compression algorithm that does not introduce compression artifacts, is preferred for these images. For more information, please read Misplaced Pages:Preparing images for upload.

JPEG compression actually slightly changes the color of many of the pixels in the image; these changes are the compression artifacts. If a JPEG of a logo, flag, map, or similar image is simply converted to a PNG, these artifacts will remain, and they will dramatically reduce the efficiency of the PNG compression, since the image no longer has large blocks of solid colors (instead they are large areas of pixels with slightly varying colors). So converting a JPEG directly to a PNG does not improve the image quality, and it will usually increase the file size.

The {{badJPEG}} tag is used to request that a non-JPEG version of the file be uploaded—a version that has never been compressed as a JPEG. Often Misplaced Pages editors will make the non-JPEG version from scratch in a graphics editor; for example, many flags that have been uploaded to Misplaced Pages in the JPEG format have now been replaced by brand-new SVG versions. Other times it is the case that the JPEG version on Misplaced Pages was converted from an original GIF or PNG version; in this case the original PNG can be uploaded to Misplaced Pages, or the GIF can be converted directly to a PNG, since the GIF format does not introduce compression artifacts (although GIF images can have poor color depth).

Again, thank you for working to fix the problem of images with inappropriate JPEG compression on Misplaced Pages. Please continue to help us; there are many images that need work. If you need help or have any questions, please let me know. —Bkell (talk) 11:17, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

When you saved the logo from the "official" site, , you probably saved the file as "doop.jpg" (since that's what the site calls it). The .jpg extension is a good indication that the image is in the JPEG format. If you don't see file extensions on your computer (Windows XP hides them by default), you can always right-click on any image on a Web page and select "Properties" or something similar; there should be a field in the Properties window called "Location" or "Address" or the like that will show you the URL of the image, which is http://www.doop.org/img/doop.jpg (as before, the .jpg extension is a good indicator that the image is a JPEG). So that original image is already compressed as a JPEG, and it will already have compression artifacts.
But that site doesn't seem to be an official Futurama site; it seems to be a fan site unrelated to Fox or any of its affiliates. So it's possible that there is an official Fox page that will have a PNG version of the DOOP logo (more likely you will find a GIF version, which can be losslessly converted to a PNG). But you'll have to do some searching. —Bkell (talk) 15:54, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

List of Secondary Futurama Characters

Would like you or someone else to look over what i have done so far and tell me if its suitable. I have also found several characters that are in the recurring pages instead of the secondary page. These characters would iclude The Robot Elders which only appear in Fear of a Bot Planet and have no story arc making them secondary not recurring. Please tell me what you think on this issue.

my good friend Will

Will, I can't tell you how much your barnstar meant to me. You left it on my page at a time when I needed it the most. I was really feeling low. You just cheered me up so much and gave me such a smile, I can't even tell you how much better you made me feel. Thanks forever for that, WillMak. In love and peace and friendship, Shannon 06:59, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

feeling down

Hey, Will. There's a lot of reasons why I'm feeling down. I won't burden you with all of it, for sure. One reason is the deliberate harassment campaign that a group of editors are doing on this article Anarcho-capitalism. It is a featured article. There is a deliberate attempt to sabatoge the article (See history blah's edits), and they are meanwhile trying to remove it's featured status. Misplaced Pages:Featured_article_review/Anarcho-capitalism They are a group that either identifies as communist-anarchists or (maybe some of them) just identify as socialists. I am an anarchist myself who is neither anarcho-capitalist or communist-anarchist. (I don't pesonally believe there is any such thing as communist-anarchist, at all, though.) They are also harassing certain editors like Vision Thing, me, and two editors who have been banned, Hogeye and RJll. I have seen editors get blocked and banned through deliberate campaigns by the socialists and other left-leaning liberals, and believe me, there are a lot of them in here. I don't care if they are here, because I have a 'live and let live' attitude about all this. It's what they do to others that bothers me.

If you can help by reviewing this situation and giving your opinion at Misplaced Pages:Featured_article_review/Anarcho-capitalism, it would be greatly appreciated.

All I want to see here is the return of Misplaced Pages to being a real encyclopedia. Right now it is a not so funny real bad joke. If you don't mind sending me an email, I would appreciate it. If you feel like it, please just send it directly to <shannonlaunois@excite.com> Thanks. Shannon 16:16, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

rfa's

Hey, Will'm. Can you check this out? I voted here Misplaced Pages:Requests_for_adminship/Misza13. Maybe I voted wrong, but I doubt it. These requests for adminship that have an enormous support (and amazingly) from rouge admins is a tad suspicious, don't you think? If it were the other way round and the sound of the ringing bell were "We need more fascist admins", I would have the same opposition. Well, anyway, if you get a chance to look into it, all or most of the rfa's seem a bit strange to me. Ta, dude, in friendship and freedom Shannon 15:33, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

User:Misza13's pile!

Thank you for contributing the impressive the pile of supports gathered on my RfA, which passed with a final tally of 0x0104/0x01/0x00. I'm happy that so many people have put faith in my abilities as an admin and promise to use the tools wisely and do my best not to let you down. If I ever may be of assistance, just leave a note on my talk page.
Misza13, the rouge-on-demand admin wishes you happy editing!

Eluchil404's RfA

Thank you for taking the time to express an opinion in my recent request for adminship. I have withdrawn my self-nomination because there seemed little prospect for further productive discussion or the formation of a consensus to promote. Many commentators offered constructive critisism that I will use to improve myself as a user. Others suggested that the nomination was premature and that a re-nom in a few months would be more likely to gain consensus. I will strive to continuously improve as an editor and hope that by any future RfA I will be able to garner you support. Eluchil404 20:29, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

I need help on uploading image

Hi. You might remember me from the discussion on the TV Barnstar on Misplaced Pages:Barnstar and award proposals. I keep having problems trying to upload an image to Misplaced Pages in the BMP format. I used MS Paint. Then I noticed that your upload was in PNG, and you still used MS Paint. Can you help me?--Ed 14:58, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

I am so sorry, I am such a idiot!! I already figured out how to put pics into PNG. Sorry for wasting your time!--Ed 15:05, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the info, but I already got it. I am so blindsighted!!! But thanks for the info on GIF, PNG, and JPEG. Anyway, in appreciation, I am giving you this.
A Barnstar! The Photographer's Barnstar
For helping me more on uploading, and teaching me about the different image formats. Ed 15:12, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Problem!!!

My image is not showing up on its main page, but it appears on Misplaced Pages:Barnstar and award proposals. Click on Image:Broadcast barnstar proposal.PNG and you'll see what I mean.--Ed 15:31, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Miss you a lot

Hope you're having a great vacation, WillMak. Lots of stuff getting weirder and weirder round here. Got accused of being somebody's sockpuppet, but wasn't surprised the way so many people are accused of that. Especially by pov pushsers and article guarders. Shannon 05:43, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: User talk:salvax

Hi. How did you send me a message, and why the interest in welcoming me. Not that I object--I was just curious...--Salvax 02:41, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks from Yanksox!

Hey, Will, thanks for supporting my RfA, which registered a tally of 104/4/7. Which means...

I am now an admin!!!

I was and still am very flattered by all the kind comments that I recieved, I will also take into account the comments about how I could improve. I guarantee I will try my best to further assist Misplaced Pages with the mop. Feel free to drop in and say hi or if you need anything. Again, thank you so much! Yanksox 04:05, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Wickethewok's RFA

Thanks for your support on my RFA. The final vote count was (61/9/3), so I am now an administrator. Feel free to let me know how I'm doing at any point in time or if you need anything. Once again, thank you. Wickethewok 16:13, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

My RfA and your vote

Hello Will,
Thanks for participating in my RFA! Ultimately, no consensus was reached, but I still appreciate the fact that you showed up to add in your two cents. As you mentioned in your neutral vote, my number of article edits is low, so I will not apply again until my article edits number around 1500. You can feel free to talk to me about it or add some advice on my improvement page.

Sincerely, The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me)

bit lost at Misplaced Pages

Hi, WillMak050389, you're my welcomer. I guess you're still on vacation. I don't know how to do much here yet so I haven't been around too much. Hope you're having a splendid time where ever you are! Let me know when you're back, ok? I have lots of questions. Thanks. Dude Aronomy 02:25, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

dc Talk

Hi. I hope you enjoyed your vacation. I want to ask you to help me get the dc Talk article to FA status. As they are one of the most well-known and well-respected groups in Christian music, I feel that they deserve it. I would very much appreciate your help with this project. Thank you.--Chili14 18:24, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

questions

I have plenty of questions! One question is: Where do I find a comprehensive list of images? When I go to the image area it just confuses me no end. Hope you had a relaxing vacation. Thanks for your offer of help. Dude Aronomy 19:23, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick response and for the info. I was wondering if there was a list of all the images, as I am finding it hard to find certain images. I believe they can be found at Wikimedia Commons, but haven't looked into that yet. Maybe I'll do that now. Thanks, WillMak050389. You are a good welcomer! Dude Aronomy 19:43, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, there a few images, or categories of images, that I am looking for. One is religious ones in general. Paticularly images of Jesus and images of the cross. Also religious icons and just all around images of different religions. Another is images of wild birds, wildlife in general, as opposed to domestic pets, and nature images. That's a lot to ask so if you're not up to looking for them I can't blame you. I know you are busy helping a lot of editors and replying to comments, since you have just gotten back from vacation. I just joined Wikimedia Commons. I think all the wiki images may there. Not sure. Thanks, again. You are the best! Dude Aronomy 20:04, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Okay, thanks. I want to use them for articles, of course. Before finding new images to upload I just want to find what is already here. Merci, beaucoup. Dude Aronomy 20:25, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you!

Honorable WillMak050389, thank you most kindly for your terrific and informative welcome to Misplaced Pages. I begin soon to study all the various and sundry rules and methods described in your thorough welcome kit! Any time you would like to drop by for a cup of green tea, please you are most welcome. I thank you in deepest humbleness and serviceness to you. KingWen 03:10, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

More thanks to WillMak050389

As thank you, I send you tea leaves in a Chinese gaiwan. Enjoy your sip in quietness.

Again, humble thank you, to most superior, WillMak050389, for high instruction on how to edit Misplaced Pages article and warm welcome in community. Most pleasantness to you. KingWen 04:36, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Wiki-break

I will be taking a wiki-break for an indeterminate amount of time to focus on other things. I will be back, of course, as if anybody could stay away from this place for too long, but I do not know when. I will be back when I am dying to be here. Right now I am feeling very burnt-out in regards to my work here, and I want to gain back my energy. When I return, you will know. Thank you very much and have a nice day.--Chili14 22:31, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
