Area code 323 is a California telephone area code. It covers, roughly, the area of central Los Angeles, including Hollywood, but it excludes Downtown Los Angeles and its immediately adjoining neighborhoods such as Koreatown, Echo Park, and Chinatown. 323 also includes several gateway cities of the region, including Bell and Huntington Park.
323 was created in a split from area code 213 on June 13, 1998; it completely surrounds 213. Area code 323 is projected to exhaust in 2017. The approved relief plan by the California Public Utilities Commission removes the boundary between NPAs 213 and 323 and turns the combined area into an overlay for all of central Los Angeles when it takes effect on August 1, 2017. The plan necessitates ten-digit dialing in the overlay area.
