Unite The Right is an alt-right gathering planned for August 12th, 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia. The even is billed as a protest against the removal of Confederate monuments and memorials from public spaces, specifically a statue of Robert E. Lee in a local park.
Speakers scheduled to appear include Gavin McInnes, Tim Treadstone, Richard Spencer, Mike Enoch, and League of the South founder Michael Hill.
Reception
The rally has been criticized by some civil-rights organizers, anti-racist groups, and anti-fascist groups due to white nationalists and neo-Confederates being scheduled to speak at the event.
In July 2017, Charlotte police estimated a turnout of 4,000 people. The Southern Poverty Law Center estimated thousands attending. The rally is to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee.
Senator Tim Kaine said that he hoped it would encourage dialogue, but condemned the rally. University of Virginia president Teresa A. Sullivan urged students to stay away from the rally due to possible violence between the far-right and anti-fascists.
