When Pilkey was in university, he was scribbling cartoons in his notebook, then his professor saw the drawings and encouraged Pilkey to illustrate children's books. Pilkey wrote and illustrated his first children's book, World War Won, and got it published at the age of nineteen. He also created the Captain Underpants comics.
