The term is a portmanteau of "deep learning" and "fake". Deepfakes may be used to create fake celebrity pornographic videos or revenge porn. Deepfake pornography has been banned by sites including Reddit, Twitter, and Pornhub.

Deepfakes done over non-pornographic 2D video can readily be viewed on popular online video streaming sites such as Youtube or Vimeo. As of early 2018 the result provided by FakeApp is clearly distinguishable.
