Papoose is the stage name of Shamele Mackie (born in December 31 1978). Also known as the The Lyrical One, Papoose has built up a large fanbase through his large number of mixtapes. He won the 2005 Justo Award for the best underground rapper of the year.
One of his most notable songs, which fans generally recommend to new listeners, is "Alphabetical Slaughter" where Papoose proceeds to rap using only the letters of the alphabet in sequence. Other notable highly recommended songs are "Charades", "Chess", "Monopoly", "Bloody War", "Hail Mary", "Freestyle Over Victory", among others. The latter heralded by professional wrestling fans, when Jack Evans used it as his theme song whilst performing in Ring Of Honor. He was featured on EA Sports Madden 2006 soundtrack with the song "Born to Win".
Papoose is known for his rhyme scheme and inventive flow in which he adds force to the end of a rhyme. Many compare his flow to deceased rapper Big L. Some will also liken his voice to that of Jay-Z. Papoose appeared on songs with Nas, Jim Jones, Bun B, Busta Rhymes, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Talib Kweli, Mobb Deep, Remy Martin, Hell Rell, Juvenile, Ghostface Killah, Black Rob and D-Block just to name a few. Papoose is also rumored to be dating female rap artist Remy Ma but in a more recent track proclaims "they mad cuz I'm close to rem like car tires" as well as stating in his track that "she my sister like Brandy and Ray J" and has repeatedly stated she is like a sister to him.
According to his management's official website violator.com, the Brooklyn, NY-bred MC has signed a $1.5 million deal with Jive. On August 24, 2006, his official website www.papooseonline.com officially announced that he signed with Jive records. His debut album The Nacirema Dream, is slated for a late 2006/early 2007 release (current release date is set to some time in feb.).
Bio
Born and raised in the notorious Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, Papoose took his first jabs at being a rapper at the young age of 11. Given the name by his grandmother meaning "Indian baby", whom he resembled as a child, Papoose is the true definition of a real mc. Inspired by rap legends Rakim, Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane, he has been well respected in the underground street circuit for a long period of time now. Papoose has survived the trappings and politics of the rap industry, which uses gimmicks as well as fake street and jail images to sell records and destroy the essence of what a true mc really is.
His first big break happened when he earned a spot on Kool G Rap's "Roots of Evil" album in 1999. After proving he could hold his own with the veteran rapper, Papoose released his own unique underground smash "Alphabetical Slaughter” where he flows venomously from A to Z, using each letter perfectly and precise. After turning down a bad record deal, Papoose hit the streets and pressed his own mix tape titled "The Art of War". With it’s powerful and unique lyrics, the record soon found its way into the hands of DJ Kay Slay who immediately signed Papoose to Street Sweepers Entertainment. Ever since then he has dominated the mix tape scene worldwide.
His 1st hit record "Charades” he spoke about the unfair tactics of the ”hip hop police”. This record went in rotation at Hot 97 in New York City and many other stations around the globe. Papoose has already put out 12 mixtapes and has a total of 227 songs and freestyles all within a year and a half. That is equivalent to 12 albums during that period and more than any signed or unsigned artist has ever done(other then Gatsby The Great, www.soundclick.com/GatsbyTheGreat, www.myspace.com/GatsbyTheGreat). Papoose has continued to drop classics such as “Let's Play Monopoly”, “Flashback” and “Mothernature” where he spoke about the politics surrounding hurricane Katrina and the disaster that followed.
Bottom line, Papoose is the hottest upcoming artist in the world and his street buzz is immaculate. His Internet following is tremendous and he has the same amount of downloads as most platinum artists. Papoose’s music captures audiences with its intelligent wordplay, stunning metaphors and cunning street knowledge while still carrying a message. In 2006, Papoose signed a record deal with Jive for $1.5 M. His debut album, The Nacirema Dream will be distributed through Streetsweepers Entertainment/Jive. Papoose is the future of East Coast rap.

Tattoos
In the music video for Busta Rhymes' single Touch It (Remix), Papoose appears to have the names of the five boroughs of New York City tattooed on the fingers and thumb of his left hand. However, in a recent interview with NobodySmiling.com, Papoose denied that he has any tattoos on his body. "Who told you I had a tattoo? I don’t have one tattoo on my body. Those were camera tricks, baby." It seems to be true, as none of these tattoos can be seen in his latest video "Crowded" (from May 2006) and in Kay Slay's latest official video single "Can't Stop The Reign".
