Miroslava Duma is a Russian digital entrepreneur and investor in the world of international fashion. She is the founder of the digital company Buro 24/7 and its fashion and lifestyle platform Buro247.com. Duma is the CEO and founder of Future Tech Lab, a venture capital fund that assists new technologies and sustainable innovations, with an emphasis on creating products within the fashion industry that reduce its social and environmental footprint. Duma has been called "a force of the fashion industry" by the Financial Times and as the "most connected digital entrepreneur in fashion" by Vogue.
Journalistic career
Duma’s career in journalism began when she was appointed Special Projects Director at Harper's Bazaar. She moved into freelance writing working for magazines including: Vogue, Tatler, Forbes Woman and Glamour (Russian versions).
Buro 24/7
Duma identified a gap in the marketplace for a single lifestyle platform that featured the latest news on fashion and culture and so founded Buro 24/7 in 2011, which is a website for art, architecture, cinema, fashion, music and style. The platform has secured high caliber clients and advertisers and launched local versions in 11 countries: Australia, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Middle East, Mongolia, Russia, Singapore and Ukraine. Expansion into further countries is planned.
In July 2017, Buro 24/7 announced the acquisition of a majority stake in fashion magazine System. The two companies will share teams, resources, and a brand identity, with Buro 24/7 moving its international HQ from Moscow to London.
Future Tech Lab
In 2017 Duma founded Future Tech Lab (FTL). FTL is structured as a hybrid that combines an investment company, a multinational accelerator and an experimental laboratory. It aims to help new technologies and sustainable innovations connect, collaborate and create products and brands that move the fashion industry forward and improve its social and environmental footprints. FTL specializes in smart textiles and bio– and nanotechnologies.
Digital investor, speaker and mentor
Duma has invested in Reformation (a greenfashion brand), Dropel Fabrics, RewardStyle, and Finery. In 2016 Duma joined the advisory board of Diamond Foundry, which cultures diamonds at a laboratory in San Francisco.
She was a keynote speaker and a panelist at Web Summit, The Copenhagen Fashion Summit, the DLD conference in Munich, Vogue Fashion Festival in London, Fashion Tech Forum in New York, for two years running at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Digital Summit LVHM, and Nikkei Pioneers Asia in Japan, and a guest lecturer at Parsons School of Design. She was a member of the panel of judges for the International Woolmark Prize 2017 and for the LVMH Prize.
In order to share her entrepreneurship experience with the next generation of fashion technology entrepreneurs, Duma joined New York Fashion Tech Labs as a mentor. The NYFTL is a twelve-week program that provides early growth stage fashion technology companies with access to New York’s leading fashion retailers and brands.
Philanthropy
Duma is a member of the advisory board of Naked Heart Foundation, a charity founded by Natalia Vodianova with the aim of constructing modern play parks in urban areas of Russia; and of Elbi Digital, which aims to bring innovation to charities and philanthropy. In 2017 Duma joined the Stanford Philanthropy Innovation Summit as a member of the host committee. Each year, the Summit brings together influential philanthropists to share their experiences and knowledge in order to guide their peers around the world.
Personal life
Born in 1985 in Surgut (in the oil-rich Tyumen region) she is married to Aleksey Mikheev, a Russian entrepreneur. They have three children.
Education
Duma graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) in 2008 with a Master’s degree in International Business and Business Administration.
Controversy
A massive backlash erupted because of a racist gaffe between Duma and Ulyana Sergeenko at couture fashion week. The scenario worsened as a tape was released where she is making homophobic and transphobic comments against blogger BryanBoy and model Andreja Pejic. The controversy led to Duma being dropped from child's fashion company she founded, The Tot, and a website she co-founded, Buro 24/7.
