Australia competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada. Australia's performance at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games was its worst in almost four decades. For only the fourth time in the 21 modern Olympic Games, Australia failed to win a gold medal. It won just one silver and four bronze medals, most of them in the lower-profile sports. It was this result that spurred Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser to set up the Australian Institute of Sport.
