A mass shooting took place on November 7, 2018, in Thousand Oaks, California, at the Borderline Bar and Grill, a country-western dance club frequented by college students. Twelve people were killed, including a police officer, while ten others were injured. The attacker, identified as a 28-year-old white male, was found dead inside the bar.

Events

The shooting took place inside Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California. The bar was hosting a regularly scheduled College Country Night event for local college students.

There were more than 200 patrons in the club when the shooting began at around 11:20pm. A witness claimed that around 11:20 p.m., someone ran into the bar and started shooting using a semi-automatic pistol. There was a single assailant, who fired approximately 30 shots and threw smoke bombs. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, personnel from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and multiple police departments were deployed to the scene.

The initial search found one handgun and no rifles.

Victims

The victims of the attack were said to be 11 college students and as well as Ron Helus, a sheriff's sergeant who was the first emergency responder on the scene.

Some of the bar patrons present had survived the 2017 Las Vegas shooting concert shooting, as reported by USA Today; it is not known whether any were injured or killed in this incident.

Perpetrator

While the perpetrator was not initially identified by authorities, witness reports identified the perpetrator as a male dressed all in black. Another from a law enforcement source claimed him to be a 29 year-old male, and a Newbury Park resident who drove his mother's car to the location.

Within hours of the shooting, at 7:00 am (PST) authorities identified the suspected shooter as Ian David Long, a 28 year old white male. His gun, a .45 caliber handgun, was reportedly purchased legally. The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
