New Village, also known as Chinese New Village (Chinese: 华人新村), is a special name created during the early pre-Independence days back in the mid-1950s. The original purpose of the New Villages in Malaysia was to segregate the villagers from the early Malayan Communist Party's insurgents. It is estimated that today, about 1.2 million people live in 452 New Villages throughout Peninsular Malaysia. According to report, 85% of the population in New Village are mainly Chinese, the Malays took up 10% and the Indians 5%. Today they are essentially slums or shanty towns, because of their outdated design.
