An initiative of the Swiss Government, the Swiss Personalized Health Network initiative (SPHN) was established in 2017. It is intended to develop personalized medicine in Switzerland. The mandate of SPHN is to contribute to the development, implementation and validation of coordinated data infrastructures in order to make health-relevant data interoperable and shareable for research in Switzerland
It integrates health data from many electronic sources.
It was commissioned by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation and the Federal Office of Public Health.

Its initial task is to sort out data interoperability between local and regional information systems, especially clinical data management systems. The ethical, legal and social implications of personalized medicine are among its first tasks.
According to Severin Schwan, of Roche, Switzerland was lagging in the use of patient data for research and development. Although the federal law on the electronic patient records was agreed in 2015 it only gave access to those directly involved in the patient's treatment. The network is intended to remedy this. It will start with the records held by the teaching hospitals. Later the cantonal hospitals will be included. It will have to cope with both structured and unstructured data in three national languages and English.
It is supporting a project which involves four of the five university hospitals to deploy personalized medicine based on analysis of existing radiology images and comparison with the follow-up of previous patients.
