Gibbons P.C. is a large U.S. law firm with 200 lawyers in eight offices across five states including in New York, Philadelphia and Newark. Fortune (magazine) has selected Gibbons P.C. as one of the best workplaces for consulting & professional services in the United States ranking 14th and being the only law firm on the list. In the Vault.com's review the firm ranks 3rd for "Best Law Firms for Integration of Laterals/Clerks", 10th and 11th for “Best Law Firms to Work For” in the categories working hours and pro bono work, 10th for 'Best Law Firms for Women' and 28th for 'Best Law Firms in the Mid-Atlantic'. The 2018 edition of the Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business features ten Gibbons P.C. practice areas and 25 individual Gibbons attorneys.

History

The firm was founded in 1926 by Andrew Crummy, a World War I veteran who attended New York University and Harvard Law School. After working as an IRS agent he formed a law partnership which was originally called Crummy & Rossbach. John Joseph Gibbons, for whom the firm is currently named, originally joined the firm in 1950, and stayed until 1969 when he was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Gibbons returned to the firm in 1990, at which point the firm was called Gibbons, Del Deo, Dolan, Griffinger & Vecchione.

The firm opened its New York office in 1997 and grew to more than 40 lawyers through the acquisition of experienced New York attorneys. In 2002, the firm relocated its New York office to One Pennsylvania Plaza to accommodate its growth and future expansion. It is occupying the 37th floor of the One Penn Plaza.

Gibbons joined the Am Law 200 in 2007, a prestigious list of the nation’s leading law firms that is published annually by The American Lawyer. The Am Law 200 is based on gross revenues and other data, which is provided by law firms throughout the nation and then investigated by reporters at ALM (company)’s publications throughout the United States. In 2014, New Jersey Law Journal named Gibbons the “General Litigation Practice of the Year”, while Law360 selected Gibbons as a “Regional Powerhouse”. The Chambers USA Guide to America's Leading Lawyers for Business, Super Lawyers, and Best Lawyers continue to highlight the firm and scores of its practice areas and attorneys. In the same year The American Lawyer ranked Gibbons 44th among the AmLaw 200 for pro bono work.

In 2020, Gibbons has 200 attorneys with offices in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington, DC, and Florida and is ranked among the nation’s top 200 by The American Lawyer and recognized nationally for its work as one of only 20 law firms on the National Law Journal’s inaugural “Midsize Hot List”. The firm has been certified as a great workplace by the independent analysts at the Great Place to Work organization.

Recognition

According to a report by The National Law Journal the law firm does 'smaller deals for big players and big deals for smaller clients'. The firm handles complex commercial litigation and major transactions for midmarket companies, which includes those with annual revenues between $100 million and $2.5 billion. The 177-attorney law firm also handles middle-market deals for major companies and is active in the private equity arena.

Fortune (magazine) has selected Gibbons P.C. as one of the 2018 Best Workplaces in the country on the Consulting & Professional Services list. Gibbons is ranked 14th and is the highest ranked law firm and the only New Jersey-based company in the 2018 list. Gibbons was also ranked as a Best Workplace for Diversity and Best Workplace in New York for 2017 and has been ranked as a Best Medium Workplace since 2016 by Great Place to Work and Fortune.

In 2016, Gibbons was ranked 185th in the AmLaw 200's list of the 200 largest American law firms and 132nd in profit per attorney on the 2016 survey.

In 2016, Gibbons has been recognized as one of 20 law firms on the National Law Journal’s inaugural "Midsize Hot List". Law360 has also highlighted the firm’s multidisciplinary litigation strength, and its contributions to several high-profile corporate transactions in the public and private sectors, in its “Regional Powerhouse” series. The firm has been ranked one of the top 50 firms nationwide for working women by Working Mother magazine and among the top 100 for diversity by MultiCultural Law magazine in 2013.

In 2009, Gibbons earned placement as the highest ranked New Jersey-headquartered firm on The American Lawyer’s Associate Survey of midlevel associate satisfaction and technology at law firms nationwide. Gibbons ranked 16th nationally, and 6th among the Am Law Second Hundred firms, for associate satisfaction, and 2nd among all law firms nationwide for technology.

Practice areas

The legal practice operates under a practice group structure, with all attorneys assigned primarily to one of the firm’s nine “umbrella” departments: Commercial & Criminal Litigation; Corporate; Employment & Labor; Environmental; Financial Restructuring & Creditors’ Rights; Government & Regulatory Affairs; Intellectual Property; Products Liability; and Real Property. These represent the broad range of the firm’s practice and areas of experience. Under the nine departmental umbrellas are numerous teams and sub-groups that focus more specifically on discrete areas of legal practice. These include, for example, Tax within the Corporate Department; Trademark within Intellectual Property; and Pharmaceutical and Laboratory Defense within Products Liability.
