The perception of 'Shire fans is that Mackin pays his players £10 per week so that they do not get any decent players, that fans will disappear in the long term and then he can shut the club down. Their manager works for nothing, and until recently the club sponsor was Littlewoods Pools, which was attracted by the joke status of the club. Mackin and his supporters point out that the 'Shire is one of the few clubs that lives within its means by not paying out large wages. His many critics argue that many of the clubs above them in Division 3 pay low wages and survive financially yet are not as consistently poor - both on and off the pitch - as East Stirlingshire, alleging that Mackin merely wants to protect his own money ahead of the welfare of the club.

''East Stirlingshire Football Club'' is one of the oldest and proudest clubs in Scottish football.

Since being formed in 1881 the club has had many ups and downs and has experienced all the highs and lows that football throws up.

But, throughout everything the club has remained and will no doubt add many more chapters to its story in the years to come.

===1880-1900===
In 1880, cricket club ''Bainsford Bluebonnets'' founded a football team called ''Bainsford Britannia''. In November the following year the football team changed its name and ''East Stirlingshire Football Club'' was born.

The club was a force to be reckoned with towards the end of the 19th century. In reaching the quarter-finals of the ] Scottish Cup, The Shire crushed Stenhousemuir 10-1 and Vale of Bannock 11-2. ]That 11-2 win is a club record, but The Shire’s cup dream was shattered by a bunch of upstarts from the east end of Glasgow called Celtic, who beat them 2-1.

Two years later the goals were flying in again and The Shire were back in the last eight of the Scottish Cup. They trounced Grangemouth 8-2 and knocked out Camelon 10-6 in a replay after an initial 3-3 draw. Hearts, the eventual winners, ended the run with a 3-1 victory and it was to be 90 years before The Shire progressed as far again.

Wales international Humphrey Jones was one of the club’s first heroes. He won 14 caps between 1885 and 1891 - five of them against England and Northern Ireland in 1889 and England, Scotland and Northern Ireland in 1890 – while he was a player with The Shire.

===1900-1940===
]
The club’s pulling power peaked on 19th February 1921, when a record home gate of 12,000 watched a third round Scottish Cup tie against Partick Thistle. Sadly for The Shire, The Jags won 2-1 on the day before going on to lift the cup with a 1-0 win over Rangers.

In ] East Stirlingshire won what many consider its only senior honour, the Division Two Championship. St Johnstone matched The Shire’s points total of 55 from 38 games, but 111 goals scored meant The Shire had the better goal difference by six. The joy was short-lived however as the following season saw the club relegated after finishing bottom in Division One with just 17 points.

An unwanted record fell on 13th April 1936 when the club suffered its heaviest defeat, losing 12-1 to Dundee United in a Division Two match at Tannadice Park. However, a more positive record was set by Malcolm Morrison in the ] season when he became the club’s highest league scorer in one season with 36 goals.

===1940-1970===
]
In ], East Stirlingshire won the Scottish League Division ‘C’ at a canter, with 18 victories from 22 league games. But the 12-team division consisted mainly of reserve sides and as a result the title does not rank with the ] success.

The Shire next won promotion as Division Two runners-up to St Johnstone in ], but as in the 1930s the club’s flirtation with the top flight was brief and relegation followed in ].

East Stirlingshire then disappeared for a season in ]. Against the fans’ wishes, the club merged with Clydebank Juniors to create ES Clydebank. The new club played at Kilbowie Park that season before East Stirlingshire regained its identity and independence after a court case brought by the club’s shareholders.

Both clubs reverted to their original names the following season and The Shire returned to ]. ] returned to junior football before later securing a place in Division Two in 1966-67.

Incredibly, it was 1966 before The Shire appointed its first manager. The board of directors had chosen the team until handing the reigns to Lawrence Binnie.

===1970-2000===
] with "The Shire" - 1974.]]
The club is perhaps best known for an appointment made in June 1974 when a 32-year-old ] began his managerial career at East Stirlingshire on a part-time wage of £40 a week.

His 117-day stint at ] typified a management style that he has developed to earn legendary status at Aberdeen and Manchester United, as well as a knighthood along the way.

During the short time in the job he found time to clash with the board, mastermind a remarkable comeback, discipline a player, play mind games and win a derby before being headhunted by St Mirren in October the same year.

The Shire had just finished the season 16th in Division Two when Ferguson arrived. He was given a transfer kitty of £2,000 which he promptly spent on Billy Hulston, snatching the former Shire favourite from under the nose of Stenhousemuir manager Alex Smith.

His first competitive game in charge was a League Cup tie against Forfar at Station Park, and The Shire trailed 3-0 at the break. The players expected a few half-time expletives, but Ferguson told them they had been unlucky and could still win. They drew 3-3 and The Shire went on to finish second in their six-team League Cup group, with three wins from five games.

Ferguson wanted to improve the club’s youth policy, and paid a junior side called Glasgow United £40 to send a team to play his young prospects. When the board reacted angrily because it had not been consulted, Ferguson pulled the money from his back pock and threw it down vowing to resign. The then chairman, the late Willie Muirhead, persuaded him to stay.

The manager’s word was law and striker Jim Meakin, the son-in-law of director Bob Shaw, was banned indefinitely when he missed a Monday evening training session to go on a family break against his manager’s wishes. The board finally persuaded Ferguson to lift the ban after three matches.

The highlight of Ferguson’s time in charge was The Shire’s first home, league win over Falkirk in 70 years on 5th October 1974. Ferguson played mind games, telling his players the local paper favoured Falkirk, and booking a pre-match meal at the hotel Falkirk always used. He ordered his players to laugh and joke within sight of the Falkirk players to give the impression his was a team in great spirits. It had the desired effect and The Shire won 2-0.
]
However, once Ferguson left, Falkirk had the last laugh, winning the return fixture 6-1 on 1st February 1975 and going on to lift the title in the last season of the old Second Division.

Ferguson bowed out with a 4-0 win at home to Alloa in mid-October. It lifted the club to fourth in the table. He won seven, drew two and lost three of his 12 league games in charge, during which time attendances had trebled.

In ], the club was promoted to Division One as runners-up to Falkirk, but two seasons later relegation again followed.

A club record 59 league points were gathered in 1994-95 but that was mainly due to three points for a win and it was only good enough for fourth place in Division Three.

===2000-present day===
During ], The Shire won only two league games, collected just 13 points and finished bottom of Division Three.

The ] season was worse still. Adrift at the foot of Division Three after 25 successive games without a win, The Shire looked set to equal the worst ever season by a Scottish club. Dundee managed only one win and two draws in ].

But The Shire dug deep and defeated Elgin City 2-1 to finish the season with two wins and two draws to avoid taking Dundee’s record. A Derek Ure strike and Hugh Dickson own goal took the club’s points total to eight from a possible 108. The other win was also against Elgin, 3-1.

East Stirlingshire has agreed to sell its Firs Park home to Ogilvie Holmes, subject to planning permission. The deal is reported to be worth £1.5million, and as yet no decision has been made on the club’s new home.

A repeat of the dismal league form shown in the past four seasons may see East Stirlingshire finally lose their league status. The Scottish Football League will consider forcing a club that finishes bottom in successive seasons to seek re-election.

East Stirlingshire finished bottom again in ], but in ] they won their opening game of the league season for the first time in 13 years.

The ''ultras'' call themselves 'The Hobbits' or 'The Black and White Army'.

East Stirlingshire Football Club is a Scottish football club based in Falkirk. They are members of the Scottish Football League and currently play in the Third Division. The club's name is often abbreviated by outsiders to East Stirling, leading to the erroneous impression that they are based in or near the city of Stirling, 14 miles away; fans and other locals refer to the club by their nickname, The Shire.

Club history

The club was originally called "Bainsford Britannia" (Bainsford is an area of Falkirk) and was formed in 1881. They joined the league in 1900, but have rested in lower regions of the league for most of their existence, although they won the Second Division in season 1931-32, and Division C in 1947-48. Their home town of Falkirk is also home to Falkirk F.C..

For the 1964-65 season the club moved to Clydebank under the name ES Clydebank, but legal moves led to them returning to Falkirk and their original name for the following campaign.

In July 1974 East Stirlingshire became the first managieral post held by Sir Alex Ferguson, at the time there were only eight registered players and no goalkeeper. He would leave the club after three and a half months, moving on to manage St. Mirren.

The current chairman and major shareholder Alan Mackin has stated his intention to sell their ramshackle Firs Park home and move the club, possibly to nearby town of Grangemouth, with the club potentially playing at Grangemouth Stadium. Other possibilities include sharing with Falkirk F.C. at the Falkirk Stadium, although many are concerned that this would do little for atmosphere.

East Stirling's form in recent years has not been good. In the 2003-04 season they got only eight points during the entire season, reaching that total on the last day of the season and narrowly avoiding setting a new record lowest points total. In the 2004-05 season they still finished bottom of the division but managed to gain 22 points.

Their consistently terrible performances over the last few years, and their lack of supporters, often results in calls for them to be replaced in the League. Unfortunately, unlike in the English "Pyramid", there is no opportunity for non-league clubs to be promoted at the expense of league clubs, unless they have gone out of existence - which, it should be noted, there is recent precedent for with the demise of Airdrieonians F.C. However, in summer 2005 the Scottish League ruled that from the start of the 2005-06 season, any club finishing bottom of Division 3 twice in succession would be reduced to the status of 'Associate Member', losing the right to vote at league meetings, and would be allowed to play in the League for two further seasons, after which the League clubs would vote on whether to allow the club to remain in the League.

East Stirlingshire finished bottom again in 2005-06, but in 2006-2007 they won their opening game of the league season for the first time in 13 years. In the fourth game of the season, East Stirlingshire thrashed local rivals Stenhousemuir 5-0. This was the first time that the Shire had won by five goals for over a decade. The result was particularly special as the previous fixture on the same ground between the pair ended in a 7-0 victory for The Warriors, just five months prior. This result was followed by a 5-0 defeat at East Fife, which many feel sums up the club's bizarre recent plight.
