History
The firm was founded in 1926 by Andrew Crummy, a World War I veteran who attended New York University and Harvard Law School. After working as an IRS agent he formed a law partnership which was originally called Crummy & Rossbach. John Joseph Gibbons, for whom the firm is currently named, originally joined the firm in 1950, and stayed until 1969 when he was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Gibbons returned to the firm in 1990, at which point the firm was called Gibbons, Del Deo, Dolan, Griffinger & Vecchione.
The firm opened its New York office in 1997 and grew to more than 40 lawyers through the acquisition of experienced New York attorneys. In 2002, the firm relocated its New York office to One Pennsylvania Plaza to accommodate its growth and future expansion. It is occupying the 37th floor of the One Penn Plaza.
Gibbons joined the Am Law 200 in 2007, a prestigious list of the nation’s leading law firms that is published annually by The American Lawyer. The Am Law 200 is based on gross revenues and other data, which is provided by law firms throughout the nation and then investigated by reporters at ALM (company)’s publications throughout the United States. In 2014, New Jersey Law Journal named Gibbons the “General Litigation Practice of the Year”, while Law360 selected Gibbons as a “Regional Powerhouse”. The Chambers USA Guide to America's Leading Lawyers for Business, Super Lawyers, and Best Lawyers continue to highlight the firm and scores of its practice areas and attorneys. In the same year The American Lawyer ranked Gibbons 44th among the AmLaw 200 for pro bono work.
In 2018, Gibbons has 200 attorneys in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware and is ranked among the nation’s top 200 by The American Lawyer and recognized nationally for its work as one of only 20 law firms on the National Law Journal’s inaugural “Midsize Hot List”.
