Focused was one of the first Christian hardcore bands of the Spirit Filled hardcore movement, along with Strongarm, Zao, Overcome, and Unashamed. According to Cross Rhythms, Focused's second album, The Hope That Lies Within, has received a positive ten bar rating. The band disbanded in 1996, but in 2009 were asked to play on Demon Hunter's "Huntour" along with Living Sacrifice, Throwdown, Advent and many more.
History
Focused began in 1990, created by Tim Mann on vocals, John Schoettler and Jeff Boetto (No For An Answer) on guitars, and Matt Archuleta on bass. The band played their first show without an official drummer, with a friend named David Shoemaker filling in. The band would soon thereafter hire on Al Christensen on drums. The band went on to record a few demos, including Situation Within and Eternity's Gate. Around this time, the lineup changed rather drastically, with Boetto, Schoettler, and Archuleta being replaced in the lineup by Mike Merryman, Jason Parker, and Dirk Lemmenes respectively. With the lineup of Mann, Merryman, Parker, Lemmenes, and Christensen, the band signed with Tooth & Nail Records, being the second band on the roster, and began recording their debut album, Bow, which was released as the second release on Tooth & Nail Records discography. Christensen would depart the band in 1994 and would be replaced by Chris Bowden.
In 1994, the band embarked on a tour called 40 Days and 40 Nights, alongside Chatterbox and Unashamed. The band also met with Blenderhead and MxPx on that tour at a few shows. The tour lasted between June 24 and July 30th. In 1995, the band embarked on tour with Bloodshed. Around the time of the tour of Bloodshed, the band began working on their sophomore album, titled The Hope That Lies Within, which would also come out via Tooth & Nail. In 1996, the band broke up, with the lineup of Mann, guitarists Mike Merryman and Andrew Reizuch, bassist Dirk Lemmenes, and drummer Chris Bowden. In 2000, Mann brought the band back together and would record an EP, which simply became known as 2000 EP, which featured three songs. Around 2009, Focused reunited to play alongside Demon Hunter and Living Sacrifice at the Glasshouse in Pomona, California. The band reunited with what would be considered the classic lineup of Mann, Merryman, Parker, and Lemmenes, with former Project 86 drummer Alex Albert joining the band on drums. In 2019, Steadfast Records, a record label that had released the debut Zao album, All Else Failed, announced the re-release of Focused's demo At Eternity's Gate, which would include vinyl and CDs.
