Tripathi or Tripathy (Devanagari: त्रिपाठी) is an Indian Hindu Brahmin family name. Tripathy variant predominantly found in the East Indian state of Odisha.

Meaning of surname

Literally Tripathi means 'those who recite vedas three times a day', including the vedic branch he was born, which distinguish them from Trivedi.

In Sanskrit, Tri means three or three times and Pāthi comes from the Sanskrit verb Path which means to read. So, Pāthi means the person who read.

The surname is most commonly used by Shrotriya Brahmins in Indian peninsula including Nepal.

Utkala Brahmins or Brahmins from Odisha use Tripathy instead of Tripathi in romanized form.
