Arifin Achmad (23 October 1924 – 11 January 1994) was an Indonesian military officer and politician who became the Governor of Riau from 1966 until 1978.

Early life

Arifin Achmad was born on 23 October 1924 in Bagansiapiapi, Riau, to a family of merchants. His father, Tuan Ahmad Melan, was a sago merchant who often traded the commodity overseas, while his mother was also a foreign merchant. Ahmad Melan's family owned a fleet of tankers, which he used for intercontinental tradings.

In 1930, Arifin Achmad's father brought him to Yogyakarta to study at Taman Siswa, an elementary school owned by Ki Hajar Dewantara. Arifin's educational background in the school made him proficient in formal Javanese, Dutch, and English. Arifin was also given the responsibility by his parents to look over her younger sister, who was also brought to Yogyakarta. Arifin finished his education in Taman Siswa in 1937 and he continued to study at the Taman Dewasa, a high school which was also owned by Ki Hajar Dewantara. He graduated from the high school in 1942 and returned to Riau shortly afterwards.

After arriving in the Riau, which was now occupied by the Japanese forces, Arifin attended a brief military course, and was sent to work as a clerk for the Japanese administration in Riau for two years. Arifin also enrolled at a teaching course and briefly became an assistant teacher after finishing the course.

Military career

After the independence of Indonesia, Arifin joined the newly formed

Promoted to brigadier general on 1 October 1970.
