New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Sagotreespirit,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Just saying Hello!

Hello @Sagotreespirit:! It's been some time since you helped me with the sikkim tea article and you have been very helpful and friendly so I just wanted to thank you and ask a favor. Could you please sign my contact book? Yours DishitaBhowmik talk 10:42, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

@Dishita Bhowmik: I've just signed your contact book. Really nice to hear from you again Dishita Bhowmik! — Sagotreespirit () 11:27, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
@Sagotreespirit: Thank You so much! Hope you are happy and healthy! DishitaBhowmik talk 11:35, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

'Weenhayek language

Hi! I'm a bit puzzled by the redirect 'Weenhayek language. What's the apostrophe for? Also, it seems to target a different article than Weenhayek language. – Uanfala (talk) 23:05, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

@Uanfala: I assume it's a preglottalized consonant. It's used in the Spanish Misplaced Pages article as well. — Sagotreespirit () 01:32, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Oh, now I it's also used in the titles of some of the works in the bibliography at Glottolog – I guess I should have checked there first. – Uanfala (talk) 01:42, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

Doneli

Hello, I noticed you just put the article Doneli into draft space. I helped its author Mohsen Ghodrati with his last article Dozaleh, and intend to do so with this one. I'll give you a head's up when we are finished for a new opinion. Thank you for keeping after standards! Jacqke (talk) 19:03, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

@Jacqke: No problem. You can move it back to mainspace any time you're ready. — Sagotreespirit () 19:04, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
He kept creating it on the main space, but I think it is up to a minimum standard now. Please let me know of any concerns. He renamed it Donali. Jacqke (talk) 12:47, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Wutung language

Hello, I see you recently (November 2020) added a vocabulary list for Wutung to the page Skou languages. The source you used (TransNewGuinea.org) for some reason uses data from Voorhoeve (1975), which has many errors (it was collected as part of a broad language survey). There is now a PhD thesis description of Wutung (at https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/156711131.pdf) so I will remove the wordlist you inserted and replace it with that more accurate information. Cheers! Dougg (talk) 22:43, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

@Dougg: Thanks. Instead of completely removing a word list, try to see if you can replace it with more recent data. — Sagotreespirit () 22:45, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
Sure, that's what I meant really. Dougg (talk) 22:21, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
@Dougg:  Done for Skou languages#Vocabulary comparison. I've preserved Voorhoeve's data for historical reference, since it looks quite different from Marmion's data. Eventually we'll need to update all the transnewguinea.org data for different Papuan language families with words from more recent wordlists. — Sagotreespirit () 22:55, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
You beat me to it! I'll also add the Skou data from the ASJP database (here: https://asjp.clld.org/languages/SKOU) as that is based on unpublished materials collected by Mark Donohue. I trust Mark's materials more than those arising from brief survey work as he worked on the language intensively and produced a very substantial (but still draft) grammar.Dougg (talk) 23:08, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
@Dougg: Do you have access to Mark Donohue's unpublished materials? Send me an email if you'd like to discuss this privately. — Sagotreespirit () 23:10, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
Also, the ASJP database does not preserve the original transcriptions, so I wouldn't use the ASJP data unless you can corroborate it with data from the primary source itself. — Sagotreespirit () 23:16, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
Hello, yes I do. I'll email you shortly. Re the ASJP data, I did check it. Dougg (talk) 21:57, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
