Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, known in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX (遊☆戯☆王デュエルモンスターズGX, Yūgiō Dyueru Monsutāzu GX), is an anime spin-off of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.
Produced by Nihon Ad Systems Inc., or NAS for short, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX started airing on TV Tokyo in Japan on October 6, 2004 (Wednesdays at 6:00pm). The anime is licensed by 4Kids Entertainment.
The program airs on Cartoon Network in the United States (weekdays at 4:30pm, Saturdays at 7:00pm and 7:30pm), in Australia on Network Ten (weekdays at 7:30am), in Canada on YTV (Thursdays at 4:30pm), and in the UK on ITV2 (weekdays at 8:25am) and Nicktoons UK (every day at 4:30pm). In North America, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX is distributed by Warner Bros. Television Animation and 4Kids Entertainment.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, a manga spinoff of the series written by Kazuki Takahashi and illustrated by Naoyuki Kageyama, is published in Shueisha's V-Jump magazine in Japan. The manga made its debut in the United States Shonen Jump magazine December 2006.
Story
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX begins with the lead character, Jaden Yuki obtaining a card, Winged Kuriboh, from Yugi Mutou, the renowned Duel Monsters champion. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX follows the exploits of Jaden and his companions as he attends Duel Academy (Duel Academia).
The Academy was created by Seto Kaiba on a remote island in the Southern Seas, with its dormitories named after the three Egyptian God Cards, and is run by Chancellor Sheppard (Samejima) and his staff. The most elaborate dormitory, Obelisk Blue (オベリスク・ブルー Oberisuku Burū), is named after Obelisk the Tormentor. The Obelisk Blue dormitory can be graduated to, but the only way to enter the dorm in the first year is to attend and do well at an affiliated junior school (English version only). As the highest ranked dormitory, Obelisk Blue's facilities are of the highest quality, on the level of the world's classiest hotels and restaurants. The center dorm, Ra Yellow (ラー・イェロー Rā Ierō), is named after The Winged Dragon of Ra. Those who were given the highest scores in the entrance exam, or who only did mediocrely in the junior school enter this dormitory , which, while not as extravagant as Obelisk Blue, still has incredibly clean and well-kept facilities and meals of a quality far above the lifestyle of the average salaryman. The lowest dorm, Slifer Red (Osiris Red; オシリス・レッド Oshirisu Reddo), is named after Slifer the Sky Dragon. Those who failed completely or scored poorly are put into the shoddy dorms of Slifer Red. The naming choices reflect Kaiba's bias over the God Cards in relation to his rivalry with Yugi (Obelisk was Kaiba's own personal card in Battle City, while Slifer was Yugi's, with Ra smack in the middle as the most desirable card out of the three until Yugi received it at the end of the story arc).
For the first two years at Duel Academy, the main cast faces major threats including the Shadow Riders (Seven Stars), who intend to revive the Sacred Beasts by creating a strong dueling presence on the island , as well as the Society of Light, which intends to enslave humanity with the mind control satellite of Misgarth.

Judai Yuki (遊城十代 Yūki Jūdai) / Jaden Yuki
- Jaden Yuki is the main character of the series who lives in the worst dormitory of Duel Academy, Slifer Red. He receives the Winged Kuriboh card, which becomes his spirit partner, from Yugi Muto, the famous duelist from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series. In the first season, he plays a Hero deck composed largely of Elemental Heroes, but by the second, he loses the ability to see his cards temporarily, and creates a Neos deck by adding Neo-Spacians to his original deck, as well as several cards he created as a child.
Asuka Tenjouin (天上院明日香 Tenjōin Asuka) / Alexis Rhodes
- Alexis Rhodes is a strong female duelist of the Obelisk Blue dormitory. In the second year, she protects Obelisk Blue from being converted by the Society of Light, only to become one of its leading members herself. She plays a Cyber Girl deck.
Sho Marufuji (丸藤翔 Marufuji Shō) / Syrus Truesdale
- Syrus Truesdale is the younger brother of Zane Truesdale and a friend of Jaden's, and initially a student of Slifer Red. Syrus looks to Jaden as an "older brother" since he feels Zane is ashamed of having a weakling for a brother. He is promoted to Ra Yellow early in the second year, and to Obelisk Blue in the third year, though he only remains in the latter for a very brief period. He plays a Vehicroid deck.
Ryo Marufuji (丸藤亮 Marufuji Ryō) / Zane Truesdale
- Zane Truesdale is Syrus's older brother and Duel Academy's top student, who resides in the Obelisk Blue dormitory. In the second year, he moves on to the Duel Pro League, but finds himself in a losing streak, which ultimately leads him to discard his former philosophy of respecting one's own cards and opponent, and become cruel and ruthless as a duelist. In the first season, he plays a Cyber Dragon deck, and an Underworld deck in the second.
Jun Manjoume (万丈目準 Manjōme Jun) / Chazz Princeton
- Chazz Princeton is a strong duelist initially from the Obelisk Blue dormitory, who has a crush on Alexis. He greatly dislikes Jaden, though as the series continues, they come to a truce of sorts. He is pressured by his family to do his best, as his two brothers are famous in both the financial and political worlds. In the second year, Chazz becomes a leading member of the Society of Light, whose mission is to convert the strongest duelists within Obelisk Blue and Ra Yellow. He plays various decks.
Cronos de Medici (クロノス・デ・メディチ Kuronosu de Medichi) / Vellian Crowler
- Vellian Crowler is the professor of the Obelisk dormitory. At first, he holds a grudge against Jaden who he believes to be a slacker, and tries to get rid of him on many occasions. In the second season, he acts as chancellor while Sheppard is away, and protects Slifer Red from demolition multiple times. He plays an Ancient Gear deck.
Daichi Misawa (三沢大地 Misawa Daichi) / Bastion Misawa
- Bastion Misawa is an analytical duelist of Ra Yellow. In the second year, Bastion is one of the few duelists not recognized by the Society of Light, which leads him to challenge Sartorius himself. Chazz, however, duels in his place, and Sartorius plays on Bastion's anxieties to draw him into the organization. He plays various decks.
Hayato Maeda (前田隼人 Maeda Hayato) / Chumley Huffington
- Chumley Huffington is a friend of Jaden's who is a duelist of Slifer Red. Towards the end of Duel Academy's first year, Chumley leaves the school to work as a card designer for Industrial Illusions. He plays a Koala deck.
Tyranno Kenzan (ティラノ剣山 Tirano Kenzan) / Tyranno Hassleberry
- Tyranno Hassleberry is a new student arriving at Duel Academy in the second year. He stays in the Slifer Red dormitory despite being a duelist of Ra Yellow, and an incident in the past resulted in him gaining a mysterious strength. He plays a Dinosaur deck.
Ed Phoenix (エド・フェニックス Edo Fenikkusu) / Aster Phoenix
- Aster Phoenix is a Pro League duelist with a troubled past who is introduced in the second year. His major motivation in life is to find the criminal who kidnapped his father, a card designer, and recover the Hero card the criminal stole. He plays a Hero deck composed of Elemental Heroes and Destiny Heroes.
Rei Saotome (早乙女レイ Saotome Rei) / Blair Flannigan
- Blair Flannigan is a transfer student who first appeared in the first year. She disguised herself as a boy to get closer to Zane, on whom she had a crush, but was forced to leave Duel Academy because she was too young to stay. In the second year, she dueled against Chazz at the end of the GX tournament for the right to officially enter Slifer Red, but was defeated. Regardless, she is admitted to the dormitory at the beginning of the third year. She plays a Mystic deck.

Pegasus J. Crawford (ペガサス・J・クロフォード Pegasasu Jē Kurofōdo) / Maximillion Pegasus
- Maximillion Pegasus is the creator of Duel Monsters who makes a brief appearance in episode 50 to hire Chumley as a card designer for Industrial Illusions. He appears again with Chumley in episode 85 when he learns that one of his designers plans on using a copy of The Winged Dragon of Ra in the GX tournament, and again in episode 92 to talk with Sheppard, only to be pressured into a triangle duel with Crowler and Bonaparte for the right to work at his company. He and Sheppard meet privately in episode 97 to discuss the threat of the "Ultimate D-Card."
Sugoroku Mutou (武藤双六 Mutō Sugoroku) / Solomon Muto
- Solomon Muto is Yugi Muto's grandfather, who is glimpsed from the waist down in episode 49 during a cutscene to his game shop. He is kidnapped by Frost and Thunder in episode 75 during the Duel Academy field trip.
Trivia
- "GX" is short for the term "Generation neXt," alluding to the "next generation" of Duel Monsters. "GENEX" was also the tentative title of the series as evidenced in early promotional work, and also refers to the GX (Genex) tournament beginning episode 84, which is in actuality a fabrication of Sheppard and Pegasus meant to lure out the person possessing the "Ultimate D-Card." The medal used during the tournament sports the "GX" logo in the title art.
- Chaos Emperor Dragon, similar to its counterpart in the actual card game, is banned in sanctioned tournaments in the anime.
- In the English version, Magic cards are referred to as "Spell cards," although the term "Magic card" has been used on several occasions. This was done to reflect the revised printing format that surfaced Magician's Force onwards in the TCG.
