Winx Club is an animated television show that, as of 2004, is currently airing on 4Kids TV (formerly Fox Box) in the North America. It features fictional characters that use magic.
Overview
In the first episodes, Bloom, a red-headed teenager from the Earth city Gardenia, stumbles upon Stella, who is locked in combat with an ogre and several other monsters.
Stella is about to be blasted into smithereens when Bloom, frightened by the monsters, unwittingly lets off a magical blast, which hits the ogre. The ogre manages to catch Bloom, but Stella comes to the rescue with a blast from her scepter. Exhausted, Stella faints and Bloom brings her home.
When Bloom wakes up the next day she thinks it was all a dream. Later that day, the ogre attacks again and this time he brings a troll with him. Luckily, the specialists from Red Fountain (a school for boys) arrive and save the girls.
Stella invites Bloom to attend Alfea, a school for fairies in another dimension. At first, Bloom's parents are skeptical, but Stella shows them the school and they are soon convinced to let Bloom attend Alfea.
At Alfea, Bloom meets Tecna, Flora, and Musa. The five girls form the Winx Club, a group of first-year fairies. The Winx Club do everything in their power to stop the evil plans of the Trix, a group of three evil witches.
During the series, Bloom and her friends discover more of their powers, and grow to be the most powerful fairies ever.
Although not Japanese, Winx Club shares many traits with Magical Girl animes. There are transformation sequences, magical gizmos, announced attacks, and of course, a romantic subplot.

The Winx Club
Bloom is a young girl of "magic and dreams" (magia e sogna). Originally hailing from the small town of Gardenia, Bloom was unaware of her great magical potential until it activated when an unfriendly ogre attacked her. Princess Stella took note of Bloom's "Winx" and got her enrolled at the Alfea School for Fairies. At first Bloom had little control over her powers, but has since mastered them to a fair degree. Bloom is a nice girl, and despite being new to magic and Magix she's become the unofficial leader of the Winx Club. However, she occasionaly acts rather self-righteous with her new friends and she can leap to conclusions.
Stella is a young girl of "style and beauty" (moda e bellezza). She is the princess of planet Solaria. Stella is the oldest of the Winx Club because she was held back a grade for an accident she caused. Stella is very vain and loves attention. She's very sensitive toward other people though. Her parents are in the middle of a devorce and it hurts her to see them break up.
Stella is the Italian word for "star".
Musa is a young girl of "music and free time" (musica e tempo libero). She especially loves music
"Musa" is a pun on musica, the Italian word for "music".
Flora is a young girl of "love and nature" (amore e natura).
Flora means "plant life" in Italian.
Tecna is a young girl of "science and technology" (scienza e tecnologia)
The name "Tecna" is derived from tecnologia, the Italain word for "technology".

Darcy is a young witch described as the "lady of darkness" (signora dell'oscurità).

Principal Faragonda is the headmistress of Alfea. She is a kindly sort who cares for her students but she will not put up with nonsense and will despense discipline when needed.
Assistant Principal Griselda is the head of discipline at Alfea. She is not very friendly at all and jumps at every chance to punish someone. Griselda seems to dislike Bloom in particular for no real reason.
Principal Griffin is the headmistress for Torrenuvola. She seems something of a bitter rival to Faragonda and it is hinted that the two of them were once good friends. Griffin seems mean but she honestly cares for her students and will defend them if threatened.
Principal Codatorta is the headmaster of Fonterossa. Not much is known about him other than that he is very robust and active. He fights with a whip.
Professor Palladium is an elf who teaches the Fairies survival skills at Alfea. He is somewhat flustered and nervous, particularly when he sees more of a girl than he needs to. He is a brave fighter though, jumping into battle with a magical simitar.
Professor Elfo Wizgiz is a somewhat eccentric lepercaun who teaches transformation magic to the Fairies at Alfea.
Knut is a nearsighted ogre who works for the Trix. Dispite being fairly intelligent, Knut is constantly messing something up somehow. This does not endear him to the Trix particularly well and they berate him often.
Mirta is a kind Witch who stands out quite prominately from the other Withes of Torrenuvola. Her sweet, shy nature makes her a target of ridicule and scorn at Torrenuvola. Mirta does not think the Fairies are so bad and even attempts to help Bloom on one occation but she pays a heavy price for interfearing in the Trix' business.
Lucy is the closest thing to a friend Mirta has at Torrenuvola. Tall, pale, and sickly-looking, Lucy has self-esteem problems and desperately wants to befriend the Trix. She appears to be a very good dancer though.
Mike is Bloom's father on Earth. He is a fireman and over all nice person.
Vanessa is Bloom's mother on Earth. She is very sweet and owns a flower shop called Flower Shop.
Mitzi is Bloom's next-door neighbor on Earth. She is a rich spoiled girl who enjoys taunting Bloom every time she sees her.
