Writing career
Autobiographies & ghostwriting
French has written and/or ghostwritten a number of books about public figures. Her work began in 2006, when she published "Red State of Mind: How a Catfish Queen Reject Became a Liberty Belle." She then wrote a second book with husband David French, Home and Away: A Story of Family in a Time of War. Home and Away studies the impact of a family member serving in the military. Later that year, French co-authored a memoir with Bristol Palin about her life. It reached #21 on The New York Times Best Seller list for hardcover nonfiction.
A year later, French authored an autobiography about Shawn Johnson, which was released following the athlete's shock retirement in 2012. This was followed up a year later with a book French co-wrote with Chinese-American pastor, Bob Fu. In 2015, she released two books about Sean Lowe and Stacey Dash. In 2016, French co-wrote a moving book about Kate Grosmaire's experiences with losing her daughter to murder, entitled "Forgiving My Daughter's Killer: A True Story of Loss, Faith, and Unexpected Grace."
French and Ben Sasse published "Them: Why We Hate Each Other – and How to Heal" in 2018. In May 2019, French co-wrote the memoirs of Alice Marie Johnson, entitled After Life: My Journey From Incarceration To Freedom, with a foreword written by Kim Kardashian. A Kirkus review of the autobiography described the work as "a moving, inspirational story that makes a powerful argument for sentencing reform." In 2021, French co-authored a book with Richard Lui, Enough About Me: The Unexpected Power of Selflessness.
Journalism
French began writing for newspapers in 2004, when she wrote a column called "The Liberty Belle" in the Philadelphia City Paper. She continued to contribute to various publications including USA Today and National Review.
In the run-up to, and following the 2016 Presidential election, French wrote a number of articles about how she experienced the election as both a conservative and sex abuse survivor. Most notably in the Washington Post. The Washington Post article led to French receiving online abuse. Over the next couple of years, French guest wrote other articles for The Washington Post. She continued as a political commentator and was interviewed by NPR about the 2017 Alabama Senate election.
In 2021, French began writing and researching about sex abuse reports involving Kanakuk Kamps. French put forward information how for decades the Christian camp had attempted to cover up and even enabled abuse.
French wrote about the former Kanakuk director, Pete Newman's abuse case. Newman received a sentence of two life terms, plus 30 years in 2010 for his actions. The report by French suggested that across a fourteen year period, hundreds could have been abused at the camps. In Newman's prosecution, only 19 victims were mentioned. Following the report, other victims began to come forward in 2021.
Political consultancy & activism
In 2005, French and her husband created the grassroots organization Evangelicals for Mitt. French was later hired as a consultant for Mitt Romney's 2008 Presidential campaign. She also served as a steering committee vice chair on Romney's 2008 National Faith and Values Steering Committee.
French was also a 2012 Romney delegate to the GOP convention.
