Finding a source

Tips for finding a source yourself

Main page: WP:Find your source
  • Send a request to the author(s) of research papers for a copy of their paper by email.
  • Check what sources are available to you in The Misplaced Pages Library – editors active for at least six months with over 500 edits, at least 10 of them in the last month, and with no active blocks have immediate access to the Misplaced Pages Library Bundle.
    • Available databases in the bundle include: Gale, EBSCO, JSTOR, Oxford and ProQuest
  • Consider applying for access to additional Misplaced Pages Library sources at The Misplaced Pages Library Card Platform.
    • Additional databases include: Newspapers.com, NewspaperARCHIVE.com, Project MUSE, Taylor & Francis and much more.
  • Search for periodical titles in the Misplaced Pages Library database index at The Misplaced Pages Library/A–Z.
  • Check on Google Books, or your local library or national library may be able to obtain it through an interlibrary loan or subscription.
  • Search Google Scholar for archived copies of journals in institutional repositories.
  • Check whether your alma mater's library offers electronic document delivery services for alumni, if applicable.
  • If the article is paywalled, a browser extension may bypass the paywall. Try Unpaywall for academic journals or Bypass Paywalls Clean (Firefox, Chrome) for news websites.

Note that sites like Library Genesis (LibGen) and Sci-Hub offer direct, free access to a large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Misplaced Pages community endorses them.

  • You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page.
  • To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences.
  • Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN, ISSN, PMID, OCLC, etc.
  • Indicate which Misplaced Pages articles are being improved.
  • Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
  • Filled requests are archived.
  • Requests unfilled after three months will be archived.

Fulfilling a request

  • Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
  • Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
  • Notify (mention) the requester using {{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}.
  • You can:
    • point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... )
    • share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal
    • upload out of copyright works to Wikimedia Commons and/ or Wikisource (but be careful that this does not breach your own institution's policies)
    • email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.

Copyright tips:

  • Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
  • Share content in a limited manner that is targeted at as few individuals as possible to achieve a specific improvement on Misplaced Pages. All content is shared under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose in order to conduct research about topics on Misplaced Pages and/or to improve Misplaced Pages content.
  • Share copies privately rather than with a publicly accessible link whenever possible. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases should not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites. Preferably, do not share login access codes for entire websites; rather, share only an individual copy of a resource.
  • Remember that you take on the individual risk when sharing content, and act in a way that is comfortable and safe for you. Individual editors are solely responsible for sharing copyrighted content and assume all legal risks.

New requests

March 2022

Need page

Need a text with this person: Arnau Guillem de Llordà. Approximately pages ~1285-1290. Preferably urgently

For List of co-princes of Andorra

Thanks, Jolf Staler (talk) 14:32, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Jolf Staler, per the instructions above, please "Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN, ISSN, PMID, OCLC, etc." I can likely access the first one some time next week, but am not sure if it will still be relevant for you at that point given the apparent urgency. If it is, please add the author and title to this thread so I can find this section when I'm at the library. — Pajz (talk) 12:44, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
Pajz, designed with a template. Jolf Staler (talk) 13:26, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks,  Doing... #1 (some time next week, provided they let me in ), — Pajz (talk) 13:27, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
Jolf Staler, sent #1. The scanner lost the first two scans (of the title page and the imprint) for some reason, which is a bit unfortunate in this case as I'm somewhat sceptical about the citation given above. For one thing, Rafael Dalmau is the publisher of the work. The library I used doesn't list any author in its catalogue and I doubt that one person authored this entire work (but I don't know). Second, I don't know what this ISBN is for but it differs from the ISBNs for vol 6 and vol 6,2 (which is where I found the requested entry) that I see in other catalogues (eg https://lhiai.gbv.de/DB=2/XMLPRS=N/PPN?PPN=647194414). — Pajz (talk) 16:48, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Pajz, yes, everything has arrived. All that was needed was page 1287; everything you need is on it. I just forgot that the "issue=2" parameter was not reflected in the cite book template. Many thanks. The second query can be executed in "passive" mode. The whole book is not urgent. Jolf Staler (talk) 17:00, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Pajz, could you resend me the pages from this request (). Apparently he accidentally deleted messages in the mail, and these pages are desperately needed. Jolf Staler (talk) 20:02, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
Pajz, could you please get the rest of the dictionary pages from this query, where all the representatives of the Foix dynasty would be. Jolf Staler (talk) 21:05, 25 March 2022 (UTC)
Jolf Staler, so all Foix entries except cols 187 through 206, which you already have? Maybe - it depends on how many pages that is. Right now the volume is on loan to another library user, but I've placed a hold on it (so:  Doing...). (Also, for the future, please add new requests by creating new sections rather than expanding existing threads. Thanks.) — Pajz (talk) 20:15, 2 April 2022 (UTC) (Edit: Added {doing}, 21:38, 2 April 2022 (UTC))
Pajz, yes, I need other than these pages. Do not tell me, this is not an electronic library? Just a couple of months ago I was given access to the Misplaced Pages Library, through which I have access to other archives of books, magazines, newspapers. About adding new requests: I thought if you request this book again, then someone other than you will start looking for these pages, although (I thought so) you could still have access to the missing pages. Jolf Staler (talk) 20:34, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
What I mean by "a library."
Jolf Staler, I'm not sure I follow. This is a page to request journal articles and short excerpts from books. Since not every journal or book in the world is available electronically, many requests here are resolved by someone personally making a scan of the physical volume in a library (some editors request the scan be made by library staff). So when you requested a few pages from the Dictionnaire de biographie française a while ago, I ordered the volume at my library, went there, scanned it, and sent you the PDF. "The Misplaced Pages Library" is an electronic platform for Misplaced Pages users which provides access to a number of electronic databases. It is extremely useful, but, of course, not every resource is available from there. // As for the new requests: There is nothing wrong with requesting more from a resource, I'm just saying that it's always better to create a new section (at the bottom of this page) since only then will it be seen by everyone interested in helping out here. People monitoring this page primarily look for new threads, not further comments in old threads. A new section can be created by clicking the "Click here to create a new request" link at the top of this page. Also, if more and more requests are added to existing old threads, these get increasingly cluttered and it becomes much less likely that someone willing to help will find the request there. So my advise is: When a thread has been archived and you notice later that in fact you need additional pages from that resource, just click "Click here to create a new request" and just file a new request that way. — Pajz (talk) 21:38, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
Jolf Staler, I've sent you the remaining Foix entries. — Pajz (talk) 22:00, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, received. Jolf Staler (talk) 15:31, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
DanCherek, that's not all. There is a second book in the main request, which is very necessary, because now I am writing an article about the history of Andorra and this book is just right for this. Jolf Staler (talk) 21:28, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
Sorry, I misread. I've removed the tag. DanCherek (talk) 21:30, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

Does anyone here have access to this book? If so, does it mention Charles Edward "Ed" Graves (1888-1999) (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/45135804/charles-edward_ed-graves)? The First Division 1809–1985 or The First Division 1809–1993

  • Wilson, Peter Liddell (1985). The First Division 1809-1985: A Short Illustrated History. Viersen, Germany: 1st Armoured Division. OCLC 500105706.
  • Wilson, Peter Liddell (1993). The First Division 1809-1993: A Short Illustrated History (2nd ed.). Herford, Germany: 1st Division. OCLC 29635235.

For:

Per the OCLC, both editions are located in The British Library, St. Pancras, London. Unfortunately, I do not have any page references to suggest, and the work does not appear to be available online or via a snippet view on Google Books.

A discussion, grown stale, took place on if the modern 1st Division (1st (United Kingdom) Division) is the same as the 1st Division founded in 1809 (1st Division/1st Infantry Division). The above book was self-published by the modern division and the title implies such a connection, but I was hoping if someone is able to access this work they could skim it to see what it has to say (for example, a direct continuation of history from 1809 to 1985/1993, or an adopted lineage such as being formed in the 1960s and adopting the title and insignia of a disbanded prior formation etc.) or if it provides a list of commanding officers? This would be very beneficial to the above two articles, as we can firm up what they both cover and word them more accurately if they are the same or different formations.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 14:47, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

@EnigmaMcmxc: just an FYI, but Hereford is not in Germany. Ironically, the British Army has spent quite a lot of its recent history ensuring that didn't happen  :) SN54129 16:06, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for that catch, I meant Herford (the old HQ garrison town in Germany)EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 16:08, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
@EnigmaMcmxc: More or less the same request was listed here recently for 101 days, without attracting any response, so you'll probably need to go deeper than just posting here. Some possibilities:
  • Ask a specific Wikipedian who in the past has been willing to do research at the British Library, such as Miyagawa or Andrew Davidson.
  • The volume is also held by the Imperial War Museums, and the Grenadier Guards Library, although those copies may be no easier to access than those at the British Library.
  • Try writing to Dr. Peter Liddell Wilson, 6 Mansfield Road, BALERNO, EH14 7LA, United Kingdom.

I know, I was hoping a second time around would attract some additional attention. Thank you for the additional resources, I will check in with those wikipedians first. — Preceding unsigned comment added by EnigmaMcmxc (talkcontribs) 17:55, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Studies in the Franciscan Order

Where can the essay Kajetan Eßer: Studies in the Franciscan Order. in: Interest. The franciscan Approach, 2 (1966), pp. 5-10. be found? cf. https://www.antonianumroma.org/prof_bibliografiaViewnota.php?lg=ge&id=3166 Dr Lol (talk) 17:06, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Probably worth checking if this is even what it says in the bibliography. There are several quite substantial (presumably OCR-related) mistakes on that page (eg "Der Laie ini ursprUnglichen Minderbriiderorden (Mitteilungen des Grabmann-Institutes der Università! Mùnchen, Heft 11)" - quite a bit has gone wrong here ...). — Pajz (talk) 00:04, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

For Sunny Balwani. "The Other Sunny Balwani" appears to be the most in-depth investigative journalism piece available. It is paywalled.

Open question. Institute of Ethiopian Studies, public domain photographic works.

Greetings! The Institute of Ethiopian Studies says they have many photographic works, quite a few that are now in the public domain because of age. They also frequently provide pictures to authors for their books, i have one of these books, but i probably can't just scan some pictures and upload it here? I have sent an email to the two mails at http://www.aau.edu.et/ies/ies-library/periodical/, so far no reaction.

● Open question: Does Misplaced Pages/or individual editors have acces to this institute collections? For Ethiopia related articles

The first tale is for Animal as Bridegroom, since the book indicates it is a variant of Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index type 425B, Cupid and Psyche. The second tale is for The Dancing Water, the Singing Apple, and the Speaking Bird, a tale of type ATU 707.

For Advanced eXtensible Interface This is an open-ended request for getting book sources, which seem to be quite common when looked up on Google Books, to help improve this article. This is to remedy excessive primary sourcing. Thanks, 2601:647:5800:1A1F:3581:FAF4:6129:CFEA (talk) 03:15, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

I'm thinking of this as more of an open-ended request for sources like this, that mention the topic. I don't think direct access to the files is needed. A list of citations will do. 2601:647:5800:1A1F:F4E8:3E1B:616:B8B3 (talk) 22:31, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Seemed cheating to put up another from the same publisher as a separate entry—and no pressure on you, Pajz!—when there's already a similar section going. Or will no one notice it?! Time will tell  :)

Anyway, if anyone can access this, I'd be grateful. Also for Óengus.

@KHR FolkMyth: Yes Sent item #2 and #3 – Doc Taxon Disk. 19:51, 17. May 2022 (UTC)

Hello. I checked the book you sent and unfortunately that was not the book I wanted. I was looking for Uzbek tales Chötiktscha/Xo’tikcha (tale type 425B) and Die goldhaarigen Zwillingskinder (tale type 707). At any rate, the pages mention other tale types I will look into. A blessing in disguise, I guess... KHR FolkMyth (talk) 20:14, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
@KHR FolkMyth: but I sent you Märchen aus Samarkand from 2004 by Keller, Gabriele. That's what you wanted in your items #2 and #3. The ISBN 9783000092282 matches it too. Did you make the mistake or did I? – Doc Taxon Disk. 08:07, 20. May 2022 (UTC)
oh, your Google Link is 2002 edition, right? But not 2004. – Doc Taxon Disk. 08:10, 20. May 2022 (UTC)
I'm sorry if I wasn't so clear. To my mind, Googlebooks can be a trusted source, but sometimes it does lead to some confusion. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 10:44, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Okay, I wrote the tales I wanted in the respective requests for clarification. Thank you for the help. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 14:33, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Iranian and Arabic Folktales - A second request

1.

For Animal as Bridegroom and The Tale of the Woodcutter and his Daughters (Egyptian folktale). I believe the tale is another Arabic variant, possibly Lebanese. Tale 12, Sitt Ward, and the Anmerkungen (Commentaries) for tale nr. 12. ITEM 1 HAS BEEN FULFILLED.

  • Boulvin, Adrienne. Contes populaires persans de Khorassan Band 2: Trente-six contes, traduits par A. Boulvin et E. Chocourzadeh. C. Klincksieck, 1975. pp. 10-14 (Tale nr. 4, Le Sultan Serpent).

For Animal as Bridegroom and Yasmin and the Serpent Prince. There are two books by Adrienne Boulvin: the first is the Analysis, the second is the text of the tale.

In Band I, according to Ulrich Marzolph, Boulvin might have cited, in p. 16, a tale by Islamic poet Nizami Ganjavi, which may predate other modern variants.
